I use a 2B graphite pencil and HB Mechanical Pencil. They're not fancy but they do the trick.

i just use a regular bic mechanical pencil, .5, nothing special, the eraser is very good. for coloring, i have prismacolor pencils and markers. thats all i got. oh, for shading i use the eraser and some eraser gum, as well as tortillians, or 'stumps', which are amazing.
ha, you didnt really ask for all that, but, just in case you wanted to know.

I use 2b mecha pencil.
I also have a set of Derwent drawing pencils.
But about 90% of the time I just use my 2b mecha and hb mecha.
You can get some excellent darks with a mech. pencil esp. w/ 2b lead loaded in it.
take care

i use a HB pencil....and well, thats about it except for a detail rubber. I do have a full set of artist pencils (6B to 4H), but i hardly ever use them.

I used to use a full range of graphite pencils from 9h-6b but now I have started to use mechanical and 2mm lead holders in HB and 2B

Personally, I think that if you're new to drawing, you might as well just stick to a normal #2 pencil for now. When you get better you can buy some good pencils to use. I've never used ne thing other than a normal pencil. Personally, i dont see the need to use any thing else, but w/e floats your boat. If I were you, id stick to drawing, and not worry bout getting good equipment, because if you cant draw in the first place, then better pencils arent going to make you any better.
just my :2cents:

Mech pencils? The leads are too thin.
