Hey,

Today has proved to be a intresting day for me. My question is simple. the other day I was driving my eclipse and I was forced to put 91 octane in it. I always put 93 but I was down really low and 91 was as good as it got. I put in about 10 gallons of 91 in my car. I did not want to fill it up all the way cause' I wanted to mix it with some 93. Anyway the car runs fine for the 22 miles I put on it before leaving it for two days at a friends house. The car was parked on a downhill incline (incase this has anything to do with it later) I get in it today fire it up, let it warm up for 3-4 minutes because the first 3 miles is all up hill. It runs fine for about 1/4 of a mile and I hear "knock knock" and a loss of power and a check engine light (yeehaw) I nurse it to the top of the hill. Driving it like a pansy to avoid any high boost levels or major stress on the engine. It now idles roughley, and trying to accelerate it like it is choking. I hope to god that I just have some really bad gas. I have already made an appointment at the dealership for monday. And I am gonna have my car towed there. Just incase it worse than bad gas. I did go ahead and top it off with some 93 octane with some STP fuel treatment. Drove it for about 4-5 miles 50-60mph. Still running rough...really rough. What do you guys think it is?

Thanks
Ben

You could try siphoning the gas out and then fill it up with 93.

Hey,

I went to move it from it's parking spot last night. It started up fine. It now idles/runs smoothy. Until you put it into gear. After that it all goes downhill. Runs rough, and stuters. So now I wonder if it is bad gas or is it a transmission issue. Personally if I had to pick I want bad gas, But I have already located another trans for my car really cheap. So I am prepared for whatever the dealer tells me monday. To bad I don't have one of those computers to tell me what code is setting off my check engine light, Sure would make it easier on me.

Thanks
Ben

Even with a bad trans, it wont affect how the car runs. Sounds like an engine issue to me, not a trans issue. Find out what the code is. I dont see how the gas could do it, it would have to be real bad, lots of water or something. I would do the usual things like check plugs and wires, etc. The code may show the problem, or something that is just the result of the problem. For example it could show a bad O2 sensor, and you be able to explain these symtoms with that (not saying thats what I think it is though). Or it could show cylinder 3 misfire or similar, pointing to a bad plug or something. I have a feeling this is just wierd timing, and is probably unrelated to the gas incident.

yo man, i got the same problem with the knocking, but i don't think it's the gas on mine... I think i got a rod knock.

one time, the intake pipe going into throttle body popped off cuz the stupid mechanic didn't tighten it properly. and well...

i was driving and everything was going fine until there was a sudden loss of power and my car kept dieing on me, i had to keep the gas pressed in order to keep the car on. lots of black smoke kept coming out the back, and i couldn't go passed 5-10 mph. my car was stuttering and spitting, and shaking, and rattling, everything u can think of it was doing it. i looked under the hood and noticed the pipe was off. started it back up, took a while to get it going, and it drives fine now.

I don't know if my story is related in any way, but just seeing if any info helps. might have a leak?

Hey,

I sure hope it's something that simple. But I am prepared for some bad news tomorrow. I just don't know, Because I can start it up, rev it up and it runs great until I put it into any gear, not as bad though when I put it in to reverse, and it's great in neutral. I have no freakin' clue what it is, I have not had any time to take a look at it personally except for I did pop the hood checked all the fluid's, and hoses, etc etc... I'll give an update and let ya'll know what the dealer finds on it. As soon as I know.

I had this problem once and it was a hose that was not connected that lead from the intake to the top of the blow off valve, to me it sounds like a loose hose from the the turbo to the intercooler.

Alright!!!!! This is starting to sound encouraging!!
Atleast right now I am feeling a little better about things. Hoses...must check the hoses..must check the hoses...

Well...I'm back from the dealer with my eclipse. It now runs like the raped ape I always thought it was. I am on the verge of laughing my ass off/pissed off/glad it's over. You guys remeber that thread last week about spark plugs/wires? Yep....that's what the problem was, The no.1 plug wire compleatly fried itself up. Where I was running on 3cyl's. The total cost for finding the prob, replacing the parts from the dealer, installation etc etc..$245. Somebody got f-cked and I think it's daddy. Well I glad it's over and it was something as simple as that. But if it would have only waited another week I could have saved myself lot of money. Live and learn I guess.

Cheers

They did plugs/wires/diagnostics/and touched up a timing issue. Sad thing is they are a porsche dealership as well. So I think I am paying porsche tech prices for mitsubishi work. Sucks ass I know, but glad I have it back, My gas mileage went up a whole hell of alot. I am only down a quater of a tank, and I have gone 165 miles since my last fill up of which I thought was bad gas

Oh yeah, $67.88 for wires, $19 for plugs, the rest was labor

damn, labor owns you. how long did it take them to fix it all up?

my97blackgst

It was about 2 hours, yeah...labor is a killer there. But atleast I have took my car to them twice and both times they fix it right the first time. I guess that's the bright side to paying incrediable labor fees. Around here in the boondocks of arkansas/missouri there's no decent mechanics that I would trust my car with. They all seem to work on "77 chevy pick ups and have no idea what a turbo is. If it ain't a chevy/30 years old they can't fix it. A good 90% of local mechanics here have about 19 cars out back. And I ain't shittin' ya. Ah well...glad to have my car back.

Cheers

in so-cali the highest you can get is 91 octane... :(

I can get 93 at about 95% of the gas stations. I also have a place that sells 94, and I can get 105 race gas and higher if I want to. The race gas runs about $4-5 a gallon. Meanwhile I pay about 1.54 for 93 octane right now. Dirt track racing is popular around here so that's why race gas and higher octane gas is easy to come by. Also I guess we don't have the smog rules cali does either.
