Turning off Check Engine light

The check engine light came on in our '95 Altima two months ago. We made an expensive trip to a dealer, where we learned that the engine knock sensor isn't telling the computer that everything is OK. The dealer quote for replacement was $300+. I asked if it was OK to keep driving, and the mechanic said nothing was wrong with the engine... but at some time in the future, the errant sensor might cause a problem.
We don't have money to pay the dealer. Is there an inexpensive alternative--DIY replacement of the sensor or turning off the check engine light? We have to get the car inspected, and it won't pass with the light on?
