i'm currently looking at a 01 VW Jetta 1.8 Wolfsburg and a 99 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. they're both cool cars with very similar engines. i know a little bit between the two, but i just was looking for some opinions from others on this forum. i know this is the A4 forum and i'm kinda leaning towards the A4, but i just wanted to hear you guys compare the two as far as engines, weight, upgradeability, what i can get out of the stock internal engine/turbo, etc. i wanna hear anything that anybody has to say when comparing the two. feel free to email me at [email protected] too. thanks guys!

i have researched a little bit online of these two cars and found that the Jetta hp is 180 hp and 173 lbs./torque, and the A4 is 150hp and ? torque. wasn't able to find a good source for the 99 year specs. so if you guys could give me that info. that'd be great. also i'm really interested in the weight differences in the two cars. thanks.

You are right, on the hp numbers. in europe, they get 180hp out of the 1.8t, whereas here we only get 150hp. I think that changed in 2000 however. I am not positive on that though. Anyway, the engines are identical, the jetta one is just tuned differently. If you get a chip for the audi, it puts it up around 200hp and about 250ft/lbs of torque. As a whole the cars are way different. The a4 is built on the VW passat chassis and the jetta has its own chassis. Obviously, the audi is more luxury and the vw is a little more stripped down. Either one is a great car, and the engine is pretty much the same. It just depends what kind of covering you want on the engine

well, it looks like this thread was kinda all for nothing cause i just bought a 02 WRX yesterday. the WRX is definately more of a sports car and definately a lot quicker stock. I bought it was aftermarket cat-back 3" exhaust, turbo timer, and a really loud B.O.V.. I fell in love as soon as i drove the thing. That blow off valve kicks ass! thanks again for your info.

I've owned both an A4 1.8T and a Jetta 1.8T. While the jetta feels much faster because of what I assume is reduced weight, I'd have to say that the A4 had more creature comforts and a better interior.

I can see a comparison between those two cars, but between them and a WRX? I'd get the Subaru any day of the week, it's a damn fine car. :)
