A Fast Camaro RS

I had been thinking about getting a GSX, because I thought they were fast little cars. I was going to sell my Camaro. But I may have second thoughts.
My RS is the 5.0. But the problem with my RS is that it is an automatic. How hard would it be to change my RS automatic into a manual transmition? How much would it cost?
What else could I do to this engine? Would you suggest an engine swap to another type of engine, and suggestions?
Can I supercharge my 5.0? If yes, how much would this cost?
Thanks for the help

I'm selling my '96 RS and was thinking about the same thing, but w/o already having a clutch, it isn't really cost-effective to cut and drill and whatever to make it a manual, you're better off selling and buying a similar car in stick. Also, unfortunately from what I've heard the 5.0 is kinda slow, and I'm pretty sure most people swap 'em for a 350, or even bigger. It be much easier for you to sell your car and buy the one you want like I am doin.

I'm confused a little bit. Your profile says 1994 Camaro, and yet you are taking about a 5.0 liter engine?
If you have a 1994 RS, then you have a six cylinder 3.4 liter engine.
If you have another camaro that isn't listed in your profile, namely a 3rd gen which has the 5.0, I also wouldn't worry about the automatic tranny. You should have a 700-r4 tranny which is a very efficient automatic. You wouldn't notice much gain if any by switching it to a manual...

Typo. It should read 1991 camaro. It is the 5.0, but I am not too sure what type of tranny is in it. If it is the 700-r4, you don't think it needs to be changed?

all of them had 700-r4's besides you will go faster with an auto than with a stick

there is plenty to do with your 305, just look at the current and future mods i have in my sig here, and yes, vortec makes a supercharger for it.

Genopysde, I see all the things you have on your 305. I would not mind doing that to my car, or something similar.
What do you think about doing an engine swap? Maybe putting in the LT1?

well, with the right amount of time and money i'm sure it's possible, i'm sure you'll have to change the tranny and ECM as well.

to swap in a manual you would need a donor car and take the pedel assembly all the hydrolic clutch parts ,master cylinder and what not, the flywheel and clutch kit(i'd just buy a new clutch kit though), the hydrolic stuff attached to the bellhousing and the T-5 trans and the crossmember i think...EVERYTHING that you might need grab it...

So lets say that I will keep the auto transmition, which is the 700R4 (I think). I thought that this transmition would work with the Lt1

700-R4 is a very good trans. i just put in my rebuilt one today. had it completely overhauled and put back together with a B&M transkit, and stage II shift kit on it. threw a corvette 1-2nd servo on it. heavy duty bands, and every performance mod that my trans guy has learned over the years. put a 2600-2800stall converter in front with a kevlar lockup clutch. and im not at all worried about throwing 400+hp at it. i would tell ya how much faster it is, and what its like compaied to stock. but i kinda snapped the shifter cable somewhere durring the job, and its a large running paperweight right now lol. as far as the 305 question. talk to 92RS about that, i would say swing for a used 350 block, you can get em cheap, in fact i have two sitting in my carport right now, one i bought for 50 bucks. all the parts from your 305, cept the pistons will transferr to the 350. i mean EVERYTHING. crank, rods, heads, intake, exhaust, oilpan, oil pump, accessories, all that. so a cheap fix, is to get a 350 block, and swap everything over, all you have to buy is the block, and a new set of pistons. make sure to get pistons that will work with the little 58cc chambers on the 305 heads. or better yet, swap over to some vortech heads and a vortec intake, and get pistons to work with the 61cc chambers of those. throw on a truck or holley throttle body, up to 670cfm. a cam wouldnt hurt, i like compcams xtream energy line. as far as the 700-R4 working with an LT1, im not sure, but i think it would. dont quote me on that.

a 700r4 is pretty much a 4L60E thats not electric controlled, the 4L60E is behind the LT-1.. i think it'll bolt up...

Them's fightin words.
why dont ya just get a 350 short block and use ur 305 components. or you can go as big as 400 with ur fuel injection. the guys over at 3rdgen.org do it.

I know it'll probably be alot of work but i would put a 6 speed in it and drop in a 454, 502, lt4, or ls6. I would personally put a 454 in it.
Just my 2 cents!

a big block would be fun, but lots and lots of work. your talkin heavier front suspention, rear end, and a tranny. a 700R4 will not hold up to a 502. not to mention tryin to fit it under the hood. but it'd be awsome to see a 3rd try to lift the wheels

I dont know about the fitting of a 502, but ive seen a 454 in one, they guy that owned it said it wasn't too much of a hassle, but then again he had alot of high performance parts on it before he put it in.....
DAMN it was tight! Black trimmed in silver, Ground Effects, and those lovely tips shaped like the chevy logo......wow
I would put one of those in before I put in a 502, because from my knowledge a 454 and 502 produce the same # of horses, so I would opt for the smaller engine.
I want to see one with a lt4 or ls6

Can anyone guess or does anyone know what kind of 1/4 mile time the 454 or 502 would get?
Or the LT4 or LT6

well if you put a 454 in it, a 502 would be the same ammount of work, they the same thing on the outside, so there is no difference to the install, as far as the hp, it all depends on how much work you do, you can make a 454 as powerfull as a honda 4 banger, or a top fuel dragster, so its really no different there either, the main diff is the cid and the bragging rights that go along with it. if you were going to put in a 454, i would say just put in a 454 small block, same cubes, far less work. just my two cents. and hell if your talkin about an LT4 screw it and throw in an LT5, now thats a shiny engine i would love to have under my hood.
