simple question

have had my GT long, one of the tail lights is out, bought a replacement bulb and was at a friends and we tried to replace it. it was dark but from what we saw theres a metal plate over the bulbs to the tails light from the inside, the reverse lights are very easy to get to but not the tail light, we tried loosening the bolts to the lights and thought maybe we had to take the covers off but that didnt work... what am i doing wrong? what you gotta do to just replace a tail light bulb?? any help is greatly appreciated
