Just finished shaving it and doing the basic body work. THe carson top needs a bit of fitting. I have already extended the area behind the rear window so I could move the top forward. I have yet to cut and refit the stock window trim , once that is done it will have a more stock split windshield appearance

The Kit is one of the AMT Crusin USA series by George Barris ( 49 Ford ). The Caron top I got at Lakeside Swap from a parts box for like Fifty Cents and I plan to cover it in real fabric. The wheels and tires will be from the 49 Merc in the same series, I willalso be using the 440 cross ram engine from the Merc kit.

Its good to see some lead sleds around here, I'd love to find a '51 Bel Air, or a '49 Ford Merc.

That looks so cool. I can't wait to see some more progress. I just love the old shoebox, man, totally killer style and incredible versatility. Yours looks like it's off to a great start. Is the paint black, and under yellow light, or is it a nice, more complex color? I would love a model painted in the color that it (at least) appears in your pictures.

That will be awesome man, blue suede shoe means you'll be painting it blue? If so what type of blue, whatever it is I reckon it'll look great on that 49.

Modgod, a Carson top is an old hot rodder's term for what's basically a fabric hardtop. They're removable like a hardtop, but soft and fabricky like a regular convertible softtop. They're actually pretty common on customs that were made into convertibles that didn't start out as convertibles.

Good Carson tops can be found in kits like AMT's Phantom Vickie '32 Ford.

Here's some sleds with Carson tops.

Not exactly , I believe his is a 54 Chevy and it has been sectioned and channeled. However I did take some inspiration from it, good eye

Purple the plan is to experimentwith the paint a bit, as you can see its primed with Duplicolor. Then it will get a flat black coat, followed by Testors Dullcote ( thinned with Automotive thinner ) with some purple pearl added in, a second coat of dullcoate with a little blue kandy. I am hoping for a depp suede looking purply blue color.

Tonio I love the Buick side trime but I have left the stock side trim on this one to retain a slightly stock flavor, I will put the Buick on my 49 Merc. :iceslolan

Thanks for the carson top pics, heck the black Ford is very cloe to mine. The only difference is that I slid mine forward so it overhangs a touch in the front and acts as a visor and lines up with the door seam also, this required filling a 3/8" gap at the rear deck

What body work/shaving have you done from the stock body (besides the Carson top project)? Is it this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3174126170&category=2582 ?

Same series but that one is a 49 Merc and Mine is a 49 Ford. I have the Merc Kit also.
SO far I have removed the door handles, the trunk hinges, smoothed the center trim on the hood , extended the rear deck a bit to allow the carson top to slide forward. The custom front valance and rear pan are in the process of being molded in. I have aslo re-shaped the tops of te rear fenders a bit.THe windshiled has received about a 6 inch scale chop.
