Voltage regulator external

Does anybody know the differance between a relay type voltage regulator
or the (exc. T.U.R.) regulator.
Is the relay type an after market part and is it better? then O.E.M.
Now I'm reading (exc.T.U.R.) it costs more it is said they will both work in my car (1968 firebird).
I'm using an external voltage regulator:dunno:
