Ok my parents have a 2000 Pontiac Montana. A while ago we were driving along and we start to feel this shuddering. Ok maybe its just a small problem. So we continue to use the car, when suddenly, accelerating from a light, the car shudders badly until it gets to about 7 mph. ok lets get it checked out. so the dealer(Pontiac GMC) says we need a new trans. price: $3,000. ouch. oh well we need the car for work so we get it done for about $2700. then a few weeks later, driving around, same thing. ok we bring it back. "oh yeah you know last time we just uh , didnt fix it and stuff but it will be good this time" ok a week later driving at about 55mph boom does it again. we write a letter to Pontiac. They reply with "your car is out of warranty" car has a 36,000 mile warranty, breaks at 36,500. fuck GM

You may have to fight GM a bit but if your problem was documented by the dealer as occuring before the warranty was over (since you complained about the problem but still drove it) the repair is still covered, even though the repair is being done after the warranty ends.

thats american cars at their peak performance for ya, maybe it should be a lesson, maybe for trucks go for american companies, but if you only want a sedan i'd just get a japanese sedan like honda, because japanese made vehicles are most reliable, but european had actually been beaten by american cars in maintenance problems this year, but not even close to japanese imports.
