Ok this isnt exactly about an eclipse but people in the ram forum are unresponsive about everything so....
I want to get a custom box in my 99 ram ext cab. BUT i was checking out the downfire and frontfire-ing boxes. I have seen them on ebay and dont know which one would be better....does it matter which way the subs face? Down or towards the front?

Don't know if this helps but I will write it anyway.. I am assuming that you want bass coming from the box. Bass is a wave, the longer the wavelength the better the bang. From this reasoning I would conclude that the box that will give you the longest wavelenght would be better. This is all theory though. I would suggest going to an audio store and listening to them and talking with the salesman.

oh, also might be nice to know that the custom box will go under the seat in the rear of the ext. cab

both my buddies have ford rangers one is a single cab and one is an extended cab. They both have the same exact sub and amp except the buddy with the single cab has a smaller box to fit behind the seat. To me they both sounded the same (they are both just regular forward firing boxes). When you are that close to a subwoofer i dont think you can tell the difference. I think if i were you i would go with the under the seat custom box just to save space. they will all pretty much sound the same im guessing.

yeah i know im gettin a custom box, but they have 2 kinds, one that fires down and one that fires out. Im wonding if there would be a difference other than just being able to visually see the subs.
oh and i had a 00 ranger with a custom box that downfired and it was the shit. i still have it around here somewhere......i should sell it

you'll get better bass out of the front firing box. and also it will most likely be put in the back of the ext. cab. and with the wave length...the box doesn't matter. what matters is how much power (wattage) you supply to the sub and wether or not the sound going into your amp is distorted or not. also alot will matter depending on if the amp is at 2 or 4 ohms. same goes for the box. you'll still get fairly good sound out of down firing box but the sound is more readlly available in a front firing

i have installed a hell of a lot of stereos in trucks at the store i work at! and from all of them the i would say the best sounding box is a ported rear facing or a ported downward facing box, with a lot of power like your amp will put out with the forward facing subs, the sound waves are just goin to reflect off your front seats and bounce around in the back... now with downward facing subs with an upward facing port will allow the sound waves to travel up into the top of the cab, and with the rear facing subs and port the sound waves bounces off the back or the truck and upward towards the front making it louder... just like a car with the subs facing towards the rear is louder than the subs facing the back seat! from what i gathered is you want a box that is hidden under the back seat... if not go with a bigger ported box that faces the subs towards the rear facing upward toward the rear window at an angle... by far the best and loudest sounding stereo setup i have heard in a truck! good luck

in the past from working in a shop myself..i have sold both of these boxes. one thing to keep in mind is the cubic feet of both boxes. will they work with your subs? look at the man. recommended specs and see. both boxes sound good, really not a diff. in sound from either one. i personally like the downfiring better since in the front firing the subs could get kicked by passangers. the down firing will protect your speakers. just my 2 cents! hope this helps!

yeah, ive already checked the the polk momo subs i have will fit as they require less then 5.5 inches of mounting depth. and they have grills on them so it front facing wouldnt be a problem as in people kicking them or anything

I would face them downward. i've never had any success with forward firing boxes. and if you can keep it sealed, you will need less air space in the box. i had two downward firing 12s in my wrangler and it was one of the loudest wranglers i've ever heard that didn't have to loose its back seat. Even with the top off...
My vote goes to downward firing
