Speedo Gear keeps freakin out

ok, I have replaced my speedo gear twice so far and it is still freakin out after about a month. I have 3:73 gears in the rears. 98 gt.
I heard I may have to change my tranny gear to get it perfect, but is this a huge ordeal or is it fairly cheap and easy to do???
I think the gear in my tranny that connects to the speedo gear may be wearing out. I assume this is the gear /i may have to change out? Is there a replacement for it for the 3:73 gear ratio??
Thanks for any help!

I know Racer Walsh sells the speedo gears to match your rearend gears but your car might be too new for that simple of a swap. Somewhere around your year, maybe '99, you no longer can just change the gear because of the computer.

What do you mean by freaking out? Is the speedo all jumpy and bouncy? If so, could be that you need to replace the speedo cable.

No its not the cable, the replacement 3:73 Nylon crappy gears seem to always get all chewed up after about 8 months of use. The last one I had put in lasted only a few weeks. Mabey they put it in crappy or not all the way or something??
Basically, right now when I put it in netural and get to about 25 mph it drops to 0. I wouldn't doubt that it is chewed up again. Mabey the Gear "area" inside needs to be cleaned out?
Doh!
Well, It will be in the shop next week so I will have them do something?

My real ? was, can I replace the Tranny gear that Goes to the Speedo gear wothout a lot of hassel??

Also the shop is removing the efm (elec Fuel management) system in my 98 since I am getting a Completely new Engine so that may help with the computer issues is ther are any.

98 GT's.... don't they have to have the speedo electonically changed through a speedcal or chip and not through a gear?

Close, but no. It's 99+ that are electronically controlled

True true, I thought about it after I posted. Good correction.
