will a new engine block delay crank walk for...

Whats up everyone,
I bought a 97' GST with about 48,000 miles on it. I just read that crank walk occurs around 40-60,000 miles. Well the person who I bought the car from replaced the old block with a brand new short block at around 45,000. Would this mean that i wont even have to worry about crank walk for at least 40,000 miles or do you think it might have had crank walk and he was trying to fix it. Does the new block even matter? I've had the car now for about six months and I learn something new everyday about DSM. What's a good site that tells how to check for crank walk in (in detail cause im still learning about cars)? Also, does anyone know of any DSM clubs in northwest florida?

I keep hearing cw is quiet rare....yet everyone's either getting it, or worring about it....not so rare is it....

whether it's rare or not Im just kinda cautious cause im on a low budget and if i put a lot more money into the car i don't want the motor to just shit out and then what? you gotta get a new motor and that's money that i dont have..ya know. But i gotta give it to DSM's whether there is crank walk or not they are just so damn fun to drive. :grinno:

Well, worst case scenario, your motor CW's and you have to put a new one in. The thing is, you'll want to put in a 6 bolt motor from a 1g GST, because those motors CW very very seldom. It is the 7 bolt motors from the 2g eclipses that are notorious for crankwalking. So basically, even if you have to replace the motor, you can put in a 6 bolt one and be done with the problem for good.

what if in fact ones motor does crank walk? Where can you find a 6 bolt motor? Also, where can i go to learn more about tuning my DSM? like the basics on turbos and how turbo timers and boost controlers work and what is a waste gate....and how to do engine swaps...and where to hook up a boost guage. i have one but i dont know where to run the line, also it is a hard line that is only like an eight of an inch in diameter is that the right kind of line. How do you know if the guage is accurate? How come there is black oily soot sh** coming out of my exhaust when i rev the engine?

you only hear so much about CW cuz peeps that are new to the DSM world are always asking about it... and it could happen for alot of other reasons than just by it self... do some proper research on it then come back [i.e. use the search button in here or google] and look at the top of this board for the thread on DSM Sites and search for another thread called 'table of contents'

one more question about my boost guage...there are two bolts coming out of the back along with what looks like a socket and then the part where the vacuum hose or whatever connects to. Should there be a part that connects to the socket (does it come with the guage) in order for the light to turn on or is there something in the car that connects to this? Im guessing i have to go get that plug so electricity will run to my guage. If so where can i get this plug?

i have read Kevin's Jewer's (95gsxracer) link in his sig: www.racingknowledge.com and that taught me alot about it but i still dont know where to get a 1G 4G63 motor. im going to change the oil in my car this weekend and check for CW. i hope im kosher :eek:

You can either get one from a junkyard, or places like dsmtrader probably, all links are in the top thread.

The reason CW seems so common is because you dont hear the other thousands of DSM owners starting threads titled "Hey, I donthave CW, just in case you were wondering." You only here from the people that got it, and for each person that got it there are 1000 more posts just yapping about it.

My thread on CW at RKO should answer most of the questions here. We should add that to the directory JoeWagon setup if it isnt there already. To the above question, even mitsu rebuilt shortblocks can CW. The first motor that CWed in ym car was the original one. The factory shortblock they replaced it with CWed. The replacement for that CWed. Then I went 6 bolt and havent CWed since, though those do it as well. A friend of mine is making 500 whp on a crankwalked 6 bolt as we speak ;) But even though I got it 3 times, I will still stress that it is quite rare considering the number of these cars that were built. So that should say something in itself. I have no hard feelings, I would be modding any other car. Just got the old girl running today with motor number 6, and its good to have it back...

moderators are administrators for the forum. They are the people who make threads sticky (stay at the top) and lock threads (nobody can post more)

There was talk of making me a mod here a few months ago. Nothing ever came of it. I mod quite a few forums and Admin one, but I have given some up. So I would be willing to mod here if Aves911 doesnt want it anymore. Doesnt bother me either way, but it would be convienent. :)

The magnus link is a good one, but I want to stress again that there is no one cause or one fix or one site for CW. So while the magnus site covers a few of them, there is still more to it. Even though I know a good bit about CW, I know there is still more to it, and all the cuases I list on the RKO thread are not all of them.
