Check Engine, Check transmission

Son was driving 99 Trooper and hit a big pothole, instantaneously check engine and flashing red check transmission lights came on. Transmission shifted normally and engine ran fine. Took car to dealer who found no fault codes. Anybody experience this problem? Maybe electrical connection loose or just computer hiccup? Believe it or not, both lights went out backing up on driveway to go to dealer. Does the computer reset the check engine light after 3 or 4 cycles without a recognized failure? Dealer said sometimes check engine light causes check transmission light to also come on....I'm in the dark here.

your dealer has a bunch of retards the lights do not come on whenever the feel like it
if they came on there is a code my best guess is that there is an intermittant concern with the trans range switch this concern should be checked with their ITCS computer not the TECHII scan tool do not disconnect battery or anything like that take it back to them if you are willing to pay the check out charge of course, specify that they connect it to to ITCS and retrieve freezeframe data that is where your trouble codes will be stored almost willing to bet ther will be a P0705 which is trans range switch illegal position and if you hit the hole hard enough I am thinking it may be possible that the switch is starting to mess up and may get worse

Thanks for the info. I'll take it back and provide some gentle prodding in the right direction. Ever since my Grand Cherokee quit on the highway after I ignored a check engine lite, I've tried to resolve the malfunction. That one was a bad crankshaft position sensor. My Mercedes has a check engine lite now and they want to see if the MAS code repeats. My Eclipse took two tries before they figured out that one. I'm 4 for 4 with the check engine lite and hope this one can be isolated as you indicated.

Thats the most competent answer I have heard. I had my 94 Troopers transmission replaced by Mr Transmission Mistake #1 I know. But now the Check Trans Ligh comes on intermittently. I have taken it back to them and they want to keep it for afew days to driive it. What are the chances I am haveing a similiar problem?

Thanks

My 1998 Trooper has had the Check Trans light come on 5 or 6 times in the last two years. I don't remember the DTC but it said the lockup wasn't engaging (or some similar wording). Everytime it happened at the same place on the same road when the outside temperature was very low (single digits F). The Check Trans light was blinking and the Check Engine light was on solid. The place where it came on was at the start of a hill. I assume the extra load and cold conditions caused things to slip a little.

In a few days (drive cycles), the light would go out. Of course I wasn't driving past that place.

Hope this helps.

I'm on my 3rd trans with my 94 trooper. $3k a pop! 127k miles. my check trans light was the neutral safety switch.
