Hey guys i'm new to this board (although i have been viewing it for some time) and decided to join in! Well i have a 2000 gt and i might be getting a 9 inch k&n cone when spring comes around. now i'm only 17 so i dont have enough monay for a real CAI but i want to get a k&n cone...now my question is would i still get a HP gain from just the cone w/o the box b/c getting the box is really out of the question for me. :disappoin but the cone costs 40bucks and the install kit thing is 26...but would this be a good thing for me to spend 60bucks+ on or are there better mods out there for 60bucks? my last question is that on pfyc.com there is this thing called an IAT extenstion harness...it lets you move your intake air temperature sensor for a better reading. is that really needed or just a gimmick thing thanks guys!!!

My small experences with different air filters and what not I think it would be wise to save that money and wait to buy the whole kit. The fastest one is always the one with enough paitence to get the good stuff. Don't just throw money at the car. Invest money where it is going to count. As far as the IAT. Alot of Turbo buick guys do it but they also heat there air up alot more than a NA car would. I don't think it is worth the money.

Well the only thing the cone will get you is a little more airflow into the intake plenum. Besides that there is no real gain since the point of the CAI is to shield the cone from the engine heat and get denser air(a.k.a cooler air into the combustion chamber). The extention cable is used to read the temp inside the CAI not at the engine bay. If you look at the std CAI w/o the IAT extension it gets the temp readings almost over the OEM manifold(a.k.a almost engine temp), that is the setup I have and even tought mi CAI(Thrasher) gives me 100+degf less than engine temp at open roads I am pretty sure that If I install the extension cable would get cooler readings from inside the CAI.
WHat is not really important that the IAT reads cool. WHat is important that the IAT reads cool temp and that actually this cool air gets to the intake plenum, thats a gain.
If you want to modify you car and see an improvement hold a little get the CAI, and install a 180degf tstat. A cooler engine would help you reduce KR, I have been told that the Autolites 104's sparkplugs help you also drive a cooler car.
So the cooler tstat and sparkplugs along with the CAI is an inexpensive investment that would get you at least ~15hp. YOu can install the sparks and stat before you get the CAI and could get something aroun ~5hp gain just for that and the investemnt is around $20.
