Locker/Axle swap

Just wondering what anyone thinks about either buying a locker to have installed or looking for a TRD axle at a junk yard. Either way I am going to have to have 4.88 gears put in. It is a daily commuter so I need something gentle. I think my current axle is 7.5"(98 SR5). My wife was a little too ready for me to get a new Taco and put a down payment on one before I got to look at it. Not a TRD!! There have been numerous times I wish I had it. :banghead:

don't think you will have much luck in salvage yards. you can easily add the electric locker or better yet get an ARB locker and you will have on board air to boot. all for about the same price as a trd locker.

Thanks. I like the idea of on-board air, but I heard ARB's are noisey though, Any truth to that?

some sounds are good. ie. turbo whine, supercharger growl, open air intake woosh, and air locker "sssssssssssssssstttt!!!" other than the audible air hissing during engagement and disengagement they are as stealthy as the electric locker. Unless you engage either on pavement and then you get all kinds of noises, some not so good---suspension and driveshaft popping, tires chirping, entire vehicle bucking around like a ride at disney world!

I like noises myself. they let me know that my truck is working properly just as they give me clues when it isn't.

Hi, I just bought a 98 v6 prerunner WITHOUT the TDR package. I love the truck, it exactly what I wanted, except it doesn't have the locking diff. Can anyone refer me to a specific site where I could buy a locking unit and add to my exsisting, stock rear end. Any additional info would be nice.

thanks

lurk around and you might be able to find a TRD rear end for cheap...check ebay every now n then...one of my buddies got his entire rear end (drum to drum) for under $200....the dude didn't know what he had...my other buddy got one for $500 drum to drum...still a good deal

i've found that on my trd 4x4 that the "locking rear dif" doesn't lock until i put it in 4 low. This weekend i had it in 2, 4hi, but it wasn't until 4low that the blinking light stayed on (that means its engaged) kind of sucks that you can't use that thing in 2 or 4hi. Whats the trick on a pre runner to get it to lock...push the button?

you can engage it in other modes...there's a quick lil mod that allows you to do that...all you gotta do is clip and ground a grey wire...lemme see if I can find the write-up for you...since prerunners don't have 4wd...they can lock it whenever
