STI Stick..

The truth is im not too good with stick, I was wondering is it too hard to master the STI's clutch or not?

not really the clutch more or less steep gears and 300 lbs of torque...lol

have fun with it! i haven't heard of any broken tranny's as of yet, so i doubt you have to worry about being too hard on it as a fledgling stick driver

he just got it back on saturday and it was under warrenty havent asked him how it was

Yes it is a stong tranny. He would launch it everyday i think its ok to lauch it but not at that high of an RPM most RWD & FWD you can launch at around 3k. AWD is diff you have to do it higher i have heard around 5k

I was trying to reverse up a hill when parking my sti a while back and whoa! it was like I was having a clutch bbq with everything way overcooked. The key is just to drive and you'll find that when you push the car, it will handle it, deliver and ask for more. It has taken a couple months for me to feel comfortable with the subtle points of driving the sti and I still have no idea how to get a great start. But that's all the fun of having a badass car right?

I can get my car to roll at 1500rpm, the more you want the car to pull, the more revs you give it.

Anybody that has to pull a FWD or RWD away at 3000rpm also has issues, perhaps these people should be considering only cars that have an AT?

Subaru trannys in general are quite difficult to learn on. My WRX's transmission is very touchy (particularly coming from a BMW background) and requires a lot of concentration to get a clean lift in or out of any gear. There are, however, problems with my tranny. My shift linkage is off, so it pops out of gear. The clutch is also very difficult to manage, I suspect that it's at the end of its life. I'm hoping to replace the tranny/linkage under warranty, but I'd love to upgrade to a STi tranny.

Essentially, you'll be able to figure it out inside of a month if you've had manual experience before. If this is your first car (which it doesn't sound like it is), don't get the STi. Start with some old shitbox. But if it isn't your first car, just get the STi and start fiddling. Other than constant launches, I can't think of a way to fuck up the transmission in the time it'll take you to learn it. Enjoy the car.

With the exception of my wife's cars which have all been AT, I have only ever driven MT's and never had a problem from day one with my Impreza's clutch and gearbox.
While I admit the gears are more precise as far as shifting than most others it's not a difficult transmission as some people would have you believe.

My impressions have been that the STi clutch is pretty forgiving and easy to use. The car has enough tourque that 1500 RPMs is plenty to get the car moving from a stop, in agreeance with freakray.

I was not talkin about getitn it moving i was talkin about launching it.

IMHO launching it is getting it moving, what else do you do when you launch?

If you read my post above, which you obviously didn't, I said the more acceleration you want, the more revs you'll give, it's not a difficult concept to comprehend.

I think by "launch" he means how many revs to get a fast start!! in the UK we use about 4.5-5k to get of the line cleanly and quickly
