Please help me. Just paid 1000 us dollars for what the machanic called a steering box, He said mine was fried. The problem had with the steering was that seemed to lag at times (ussaully at the worst times). I would start to turn and it felt like gtr 32 didnt want to respond. After about a second it seemed to break free and make the turn. When I picked the car up from the shop he said he replaced the part but the he thinks the frame is bent. One did this dude take me for a grand. Two what the best way to check a frame. I would love to do the qtr but with this problem I do want to put others at risk. Yes the steering fuild is full. thanks

Best way would be on a wheel alignment machine.

A bent frame effecting the steering would show up as a very bad alignment.

The only other way is a detialed inspection of the frame, looking for crease's, small dents, etc.
However if you've never done it before its very easy to miss what might be only a small deformation.
However an experianced panel beater should be able to spot it.

It sounds like a HICAS problem, a slipping belt or power steer pump failure. Have you had your HICAS light coming if so that will cause the steering to be extremely heavy, almost like you can't turn the wheel at all.
I've never heard of or seen the steer rack fail on any skyline let alone the GTR.

In my R32 GTS, the power steering variable-assist thingy was pretty much stuffed. What's supposed to happen is that at low speeds there's more power assist, and it decreases at high speeds. I dunno if the GTRs have the same thing or not, but it's a thought. Mine was buggered, such that I always had the lower amount of power assist. Sometimes (randomly and unpredictably) the full power-assist would kick in, and that was bloody awful. I finally found out where the little electronic module controlling it lived, and removed it. Problem fixed as far as I was concerned, as I liked the lower amount of power-assist. I'm guessing if that were the case for you you'd want it fixed or replaced, as the GTR steering is significantly heavier than a GTS' anyway.
