As I am AN elderly Gent, I hardly ever drive over 50mph, This meanes I am going to have to look into some tuneup proceedures!! Thanks (Now I am for Sure Piedoff )at This JeeP!!!

Your mileage is about like mine. I find there's a big difference in stop & go city driving (poor) and highway crusing (pretty good). Although I've not carefully checked it, it seems to me that mileage is worse in winter here in WI where most of my day to day driving just barely gets the Jeep up to temperature.

I've never found the dealer tune-ups to make a noticable mileage difference. Let us know if it helps you. In my view, it's just a fairly heavy vehicle, a big engine and low gearing.

15 mpg seems to be the reliable expectation for my '93. Worse when I have to use 4wd, better when going 55-60 on highway... but still 15 when driving 65-75 on highway. 15 mpg... it's a jeep thing, I guess.

I have a '91 with the 4.0 HO. I get consistent 17-18 mpg. About 310 miles to a tank.

I have an 89 Limited with the 4.0 and driving at highway speeds (65 -75) MPH, I am getting between 22- 25 MPG, The truck has 140,000 miles and the engine has 1200 miles.
Been happy with milage so far.

Cruzing at 50mph I can get 22-23.
At 80 I get 16.5-18 mpg.

When I drive in heavy city traffic in Atlanta, I can get as low as 11mph but average 13. But this is at about 20 mph and just lugging along intown.

I get my numbers from the computer in the overhead console. The most inportant thing for milage is to make sure you are going fast enough to be in the top gear, but not any faster.

The Cherokee is just a big box, so the coefficent of Drag is a killer for us. Drag increases 4x when speed increases 2x. But you always want to use the best gear ratio (highest). When I drive intown, I am probably only in second (guessing, because of my automatic tranny) hence, my horrible milage.

Look at mileage of ANY SUV, Truck, or Even Minivan that has a 6 cylinder or more. They all get the same mileage as us, maybe a little better, probably a little worse.

My Jeep is an 88 Laredo with the Power / Comfort switch. I live in a mountainous area.

If I am in "power" mode I get 10 to 15 mpg climbing grades.
If I leave it in "comfort" depending on the terrane and speed I get 15 to 25 mpg.
If I am in low range I need to haul a gas station with me.

The Jeep is a heavy box in a wind storm with a big guy pushing it along, and he gets very thirsty.

My 90 with a 4.0, automatic gets 17 to 22 on the highway, loaded with people and gear. My mileage lately has been very low... 13.22. This is in northern Montana, snow and ice is all I see on the road: will soon will be rocks and dirt when the ice melts. A 2-1/2 mile commute twice a day and allowing for 2 to 3+ minutes of warmup in 10 to 30 degree weather = really bad gas mileage! But heck, it's better than stop and go in the city!!

my 90 4.0 has about the same mileage. my a/c gives me really crappy mileage. i like to roll with the windows down anyway though so it is fine with me

I just put 31x10.5 ATs with a 3-inch lift on my 97 and I can really tell that my mileage has dropped.

I did some highway driving over the weekend and at a 60-65 mph cruise, I have lost 2-3 MPG. This puts me down to the 13-15 range. Sometimes lower in city traffic.

I would have thought that larger tires would effectively increase my top gear (lowering my RPMs at speed in top gear) and give me better gas mileage.

Of course, those tires weigh more than stock, and have significantly more rolling resistance, so that can't help.

I am wondering what one could do to get better mileage. I know, good air filter, proper inflation in the tires.

But think for a moment. If you could do a “major mod” to a Cherokee to lower drag or weight or make the engine more efficient what would it be? Think “money no object”, just scientific curiosity

I too have a mileage issue with my 92 Cherokee Laredo (6cyl 4.0L). I had a fuel pump go bad, shortly after replacement went from over 300 miles per tank to just over 200. I still have all the power and it idles fine. Does anyone have any ideas???

I have a 98 cherokee sport 4.0 that I recently replaced the fuel pump and my mileage dropped from 22-24 hwy @70 mph to 18-19 mpg. Since then I have replaced Plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, also installed a fram air hog filter. If anybody has any suggestions they would be appreciated.

After doing the math, seems that Joe said he's getting 9 mpg, (190 miles / 20 gal) which is way off what everyone else is getting. Joe, I've heard that a bad O2 sensor can make mileage worse, you may want to give that a check.
