dont get me wrong bout this whoevers a peugeot fan cuz im for marcus all the way. the 307 is a much much more powerful car but doesnt having a longer wheelbase make the 307 somewhat worse than the 207 on the sharp turns?

Sure, the 307 is larger than the 206 in every dimension, that has to have consequenses. Should be able to overcome though. Look at the pace of the 03/04 Focus, that has the longest wheelbase of all the World Rally Cars. Took M-Sport a while to sort everything out, but Markko's pace isn't a problem now is it?

I think the one rally where width is the biggest problem is the Swedish - and Marcus would have won that without a few loose screws!

I think the biggest issue with the 206 was that it's engine was too old and therfore according to FIA regs could not be developed any further. 206 engine is based on the block out of the 405 that is no longer in production. The 307's engine is based on a block still in production (406?) so can be tweaked to produce much more torque and power. So much so that Peugeot are only using a four speed gearbox!

I heard other reasons for using a 4 speed box, amongst them things like savings in the rotating mass area as well as using longer gear ranges with longer power bands.
Peugeot still have a 5-speed box though in the event that the rally warrants using it.
Obviously less gear changes means less time lost in gear shifting too.

Definitely, having fewer moving parts means there is less to go wrong. Also reduces weight, or for the same weight, the strength of each part can be increased. It was certinaly an eye opener that Peugeot chose to use the 4-speed on the Swedish, given that it is the second fastest event on the calendar!
