How old were you when you first started riding? I was just wondering cause a lot of people who post on this board seem to be in their teens. Did all of you start riding when you were younger?

Okay, I voted <15 because the first time I rode was on a Honda 50 when I was like 7 or 8. I never learned how to shift or anything (yard wasn't big enough to use 2nd gear) but I learned throttle control and what-not. I had a little "incident" on the dirt bike, and didn't start riding again until March of 2002 when I learned street riding at the age of 19. I'm now 21 and I LOVE riding twisties.

19, Started on the streets. Im 20 now. Would have started at 16 if I had the money or if the parents would have allowed it. But theres no way in hell they would have. I understood though. Start early while your reflexes are at their prime.

i learned this past summer up in utah. my friend bought a 83 650 nighthawk and he had a big church(bet youll never guess what type of church?) parking lot across the street so we spent about a week up their in the lot learnig how to ride. ever since then i fell in love with bikes. and i will get one as soon as i sell my civic.probably a '88 honda hawk(650), suzuki gs500, or sv650 is what i am mostly looking at.

Some of you wont believe this but its true....

I learned in the parking lot of the dealer i bought the bike from. Its was kinda in the middle of no-where so it was a big lot. I rode for a few hours then roke it home on the highway in the rain.

i DO NOT recomned doing it this way, Im an exception because im so great!

I started riding dirt when i was 12 then got onto the street on my 91 zx-6r when I was 18. I paid $800 for it and figured that it's cheap enough to where I don't care about it, but as long as it ran good I was good to go. Never took msc but I still knew better than to try to keep up with the badasses, and to stay away from old ladies drivng. Then I got a 00 zx-6r about 3 years later and I loved it. Had to sell it just last fall because I was poor. :crying: But I'm looking at one of the new cbr 600rr!

I started riding when I was arround 12, I think. First street bike at 17. 81' Yamaha 250 street bike. It was a big piece of junk, but it was fun. Bought it for $200 and sold it for $700. Now at 23 I have a shadow and will never get rid of it.....I wish I could go ride it right now.

First started riding when i was 8 with an oooold honda 50cc minibike. When I was aobut 10, i upgrgaded to some 80cc dirtbike, but I dont remember what brad it was. Yamaha I think. When I was about 12, i got myself a 125cc 3 wheeler (TONS! of fun, too bad they're too dangerous to make anymore) and kept that until I was about 15, when my dad an I picked up a '76 honda 360T crusier for $8 and a bottle of whiskey from our neighbor. Took a year to rebuild that and get it working. Rode that around for a while, until i was aobut jeez, 17 I think when my dad and I got a brand new suzi DR650. Huuge power difference.. that thing is a torque beast... now soon at the ripe old age of 19 (but not for long ;) ) i hope to be upgrading to a suzuki (edit) SV650!

I started out on my friend's YZ250 dirt bike when I was in junior high. My parents bought me one, in which I had for two summers until it caught on fire in my same friend's garage.

Purchased a 2000 GSX-R when I was 18. Now 23, I still own the bike but living in Colorado doesn't bring much good riding days. Also going to college is a pain too.

I started riding at the age of 18 on a 1986 Kawasaki 900 Ninja. I wish I had started on a smaller bike but I lived thru it. I have now been riding over 17 years and still ride a Rice Rocket. I might buy a cruiser when I grow up and become more mature. I am curently riding a 2000 ZX-9R with Muzzys big Bore Kit.

what are you saying? 954 isn't a litre bike. basic maths. 9.54 rounds up to 10.00 equals a litre. also cruisers aren't over a litre? :icon16:

just messin with ya. i know deep down i'm just not quite there yet. maybe in a years time i think about contemplating discussing the possibility of an upgrade. indecisive bastard aren't i

Blayne, if my dad (who is 54) just got rid of the Viffer this past year, then you've got a whole other lifetime before you are allowed to call it quits on sportbikes!!!

Besides, I have a friend who is about 51 who rides a 1990 CBR1000F with over 100,000 miles on it... some track miles. Don't you dare go over to the dark side! At least not yet.

Tangie, are you talking about DAD from sbw.sportbikes.com? People very often say he has enough skills to beat guys in their current 600s with a Ninja 250.

Aussie, don't get your hopes down, you're only old as one of my Aussie uncles, hehe. I think a person is only old as they look/feel like to him/herself. If 954 is too much for ya, get a 05 gixxer 750. :D

Z, yeah, DAD is one of my good riding buddies. He promotes INSANELY good WV rides during the summer! He has actually beat a Busa with an EX500 in the twisties. Not even kidding. The man is just SICK with ability... but he's been riding longer than most of us on the board have been alive.

I learned to ride on the Saturday after my 18th birthday when I bought my brothers Honda CX500. On Sunday he rode with me on the expressway, and the rest was trial and error. The MFS course was very expensive at the time, so I never took it. That was 22 years ago.

I started with a new 1981 Honda XL-250 when I was 20 years old in 1981. Bike cost $1300 then and I kept it for 2 years and rode it over 10,000 miles. I'm 44 now and been thinking about the midlife crisis motorcycle :icon16: . Best advise I can give a younger person is not to get too crazy and go too fast. You only live (and die) once and it's just not worth taking unnecessary chances. Always wear your protective equip. and BE CAREFUL! :iceslolan

GOOD ADVISE,

I live in FL and it sucks here. You kinda cant injoy rideing. You are to damn busy looking around every where. Some old ass lady that can't see over the dash or some really young new driver that should not be on the road yet pulls out and WAM!!!

I started riding dirt bikes at 12, my first bike was an xr80.
My first road bike was a 79mdl srx250 (mad little bike, quick for a 250 and great handling) I got it of a mate basically for free. He got it off a mate that worked at the tip (where it was dumped) neither of them could get it started so they gave it to me and all it was in the end was the carby and the battery. I didnt spend any money on carby and the battery was cheap. The bike was in good condition and never dropped as far as i could tell, that is until i got it. About 12months after i got it, a car pulled out in front of me and my mate (that was on the back)
I dropped it narrowly missing the car. We just took off skin, no broken bones. All the bike copped was a broken indicator and a small dint in the tank, 12 months later and after much thrashing, i sold it for $500. it was a good bike.
I had a yamaha xr550 road bike after that and a rt390 2 stroke road/trail
but sold them 2.
I now ride a 75 ninja 600, also a mad bike.

I was 8 when I got my first fat wheel honda-matic 50. That lasted me for 3 years when my father bought me a hudaka (spelling?) 100 cc Then it is one bike after another as I got into moto-cross. I wrecked more bikes and broke more bones than I can remember. At 16 I was furtunate enough to get my father's 69' BSA lighting. It was a custom that he rescued from the bone yard. At 18 my father gave me his 67 xlh sportster. My daily ride was a 84 Yamy fj1100.
Now in my mid thirtys with kids and a morgage the closest I get riding to 2 wheels is on a mountain bike with the kids at the park.

I voted 15 because my first vehicle was a Vespa scooter which I needed to get back and forth to my part-time job after school. Now I am 60, and getting to the point of not remembering how many motorcycles I have had over the decades. Currently, I ride either my '92 Harley FXRS-Convertible or my 03 FXDXT. My wife rides an '02 Harley FXDL. Our daughter rides a '98 Kawasaki Vulcan Classic Cruiser. I suspect my grandkids will ride when they are much younger than I started.
