Who here works out regularly?

If so, what sort of exercise do you do?

I’m trying to get to the gym 4-5 days a week. Mainly cardio (as I have built up quite a large amount of muscle and don't need to build anymore). I just need to burn off the fat on top! :p

I don't hit the gym or anything. I just take the stairs instead of the elevator and park at the far end of the parking lot, etc., just small stuff like that.

In the football off season- four times a week.

During the season, two.

It's mainly wieght training and cardio makes up a pretty small part.

My routines for fitness change with my body, basically.

i am currently trying to gain weight. therefore i am pretty similar to jimster in the aspect of training. i do very little cardio. work out 3x a week: focus on one muscle group per day.
week1:
day 1: chest, biceps, triceps.
day2: off
day3: all of the back including traps, lats, shoulders.
day4: off
day5: legs, abs, obliques.
days 6&7: play golf, (weekend) ride bike, hit punching bag.
week2: same schedule as posted, just make SURE you are not doing all of the same exercises for the same muscles. you gotta change it up. i will be back later- right now it is 6:50am and i am getting ready for school.

ok back from school. for the female: you should do 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps generally for any exercise. i do work out like this when i need to tone up-but as a male i am mainly going for mass. therefore, i do 4-5 sets of 6-8 reps. i try to wait 2-3 minutes between each set. i also drink water between exercises usually.
-biggest tip i can give you spec:during weight training, do not wait more than 30 seconds between each set, and no more than a minute between exercises(if possible). this will give you a somewhat cardio-experience while weight training, known as "circuit-training".

I get to the gym for a run (outside in the summer) at least four days a week and lifting for four days. Depending on the time of the year, their is hockey, sailing rollerblading and basketball to be played.

I practice martial arts: Wushu and Taiji.

5 days a week, not to mention no fast foods and lots of water and I lost a lot of weight. I only noticed the difference in my cheeks but my gf noticed it immediately, hahahahahahah, it's cool. :smokin:

I do all sorts. I goto the gym 3x a week when I'm at uni, I do weights at home about 4x a week, go indoor rockclimbing once a week, rollerblading 1-2x a week and ski 2/7 days in winter (average). :)

Well at the moment I'm with a personal trainer, will be for two more weeks. I basically do this twice a week.

I have
One lower body omound exercise (Squats/Dead lifts) with 2 Reps
One Upper body compound with a Push (Chest press, Press ups etc.) With 2 Reps
One Upper Body Compound with a Pull (Lat Pull down, Chin ups etc.) with 2 reps
Then usually lunges or more squats with 2 reps for a bit more compound lower.

Then Isolated Tricep, ab, glut and leg work for a bit.

With of course Cardio at the start.

I'm going to the Uni gym where I'll up my useage of it now to about 4 times and like Jim, am also a footballer.

I usually go to the gym around 3 times a week, mostly weight training and some cardio. Also used to play a lot of footie.
However due to responsibilities piling up at work, having to study for professional qualifications when i get home, a gf who complains i dont see her enough, and friends who complain i dont see them enough, i dont have time to do diddly squat. Havent been to the gym in over a month now, which is a shame cos it helps me unwind... oh well, at least i eat healthy..

I'm with kittedb18bt, our retuine is pretty simular. I too am trying to gain weight. Would like to be around 215-220 or so, right now I'm at 201. I don't do much cardio at the gym, just lots of weights. Outside the gym is where my cardio comes in, with mt. biking and playing the drums.

I asked a personal trainer the same question a while back, and he told me the best thing to do would be to run or somthing of the sort cardiovascular, but do it with a steady pace sprinting to top speed sometimes. He said that changing your heart rate like that will give you a higher metabolism.

Why does dark beer have to have so many more calories than light beer? I bust my ass at the gym everyday. Run 2-3 miles, lift weights, stretch, use the eliptical trainer, AND dance Mon for 1hr1/2, Tues 2 1/2 hrs, Thurs 3 1/2 hrs, Sat 1 1/2 hr. If I had done this before I started drinking I'd look aneorexic. I think that in heaven, beer makes you lose weight.

if you're doing all that most days of the week then its clear why you're not losing much weight or gaining much muscle. You're overtraining waaaaaayy too much. your body cannot handle weights AND long distance jogs AND all that dancing at the same time. Your body is holding onto as much fat as it can because it feels that there may be a shortage of essential basic fats coz of all the exercise you're doing. Cut back on the workouts, try and keep it around 3 days of weights per week and the other 4 days for just running or dancing but not both on the same day.

I'm on the bigger, faster, stronger plan at school for next football season. I'm trying to gain maybe 30 pounds of muscle, as the coach wants me to play linebacker. Usually its 3 sets of ten reps, and when we're lifting competitively, i.e. to build muscle fast, its usually 3 sets of 3 reps. Mostly working on my explosiveness and speed, while trying to increase upper body strength, and lower body stamina.

Not bothering to go to the gym has reminded me of what a waste of time and money it is.

I've lost more weight from walking to Uni 3 times a day (about a 5-10 minute walk and a hill) and town (involves a big hill) around once a day-once every two days. Of course there is also my eating, which while isn't healthy- also isn't excessive.

And If I want to tone up? I've got 90 kg's to work with that I got for free (i.e. My body weight).

FUCK THE GYM!

30 pounds of muscle?????? sorry mate, ain't gonna happen unless you train for a few years. you can't just put on 30lbs of muscle overnight, it takes a long time to gain some serious muscle which is why most people give up and stop going to gym, because they're too impatient to put in the years of dedication and work. Also, 3 sets of 3 reps????? your couch doesn't seem like he knows much about putting on muscle mate. you'd be putting on muscle much faster and more efficiently working in a rep range between 4-8 maybe even 10 but not 3 reps, thats just ridiculous.

well you may be happy with what you got naturally. others like me on the other hand want to keep improving their body to a level beyond what you can do with just your own bodyweight. Look at it this way, in 2 years of training at home with your own bodyweight and such exercises will be LUCKY at most if they yield the same muscle gains as working out 6 months in the gym will, let alone the balance in your muscles, ie having huge arms but small twig like legs. now who would be wasting time here??? the guy working 2 years or the guy who can get the same results in 6 months. You guys just seem to impatient, it takes a long time to grow your muscles right and anyone who works out regularly will tell you that.

The gym (imo) is only good for those wanting to really tone their body.

My brother use to be hidously over-weight (bordering on obesety) and around may last year, started riding his bike, a few months later, started riding his bike every day (from 1 day a week), now we can't get him off the damn thing, and he's lost sooo much weight, he looks like a normal person now.

I just started a speed and strength program at school for football this summer. We lift for hour and a half and then work on sprinting for half an hour. I usually run or bike 3 or 4 times a week. On top of that i work warehouse at a flooring store, lifting carpet remnants, tile, wood and what have you. BTW, Fuck the gym. Costs way to much money. Go buy your own weights. So much cheaper and no waiting.

I've stopped a lot of my resistance training and gone mostly to cardio at the moment to lose a little bit more weight to really define a lot of the muscles. Did a bit over an hour last night at damn high resistance and the machines reckoned I burned about 1,400 calories. :) Schwing!

If you are trying to lose weight try to keep your heart rate below the cardio zone. When you work too hard your body burns up glycogen instead of fat. If you keep your heart rate low your body will be able to burn fat WHILE you excercise

with that said, losing weight is overrated!

I try to work out 3 nights a week with resistance training, topped off with at least 30 minutes of cardio after 60 to 90 minutes on the weights. 2-3 nights of my "off weights" nights I like to get a cardio workout, but may substitute mowing my lawn (1 hour with push mower) or something like that when I need to get things done around the house. I haven't worked out for 3 weeks now due to work schedule, and an old injury re-infecting. I actually bumped my injury and it inflamed while working to change the heater core in a 1994 Ford Escort (kind of a tough thing to do when you are 6'1", have a large frame, and only have a hour or so spare each day). :1zhelp:

Anyway, I'm posting this reply in this discussion thread since I'm new, and I at least know about working out, at least more than working on cars (even though my Dad owned a Union 76 w/ shop in the 60's & 70's - he sold it before I was old enough for a driver's license).

Try www.musclemaster.com for supplements, workout advise, etc. I like their products, and they do have great suggestions for bodybuilding, fat reduction, etc. :2cents:

Ive never heard of 3 sets of 3 reps before, but i know the basic idea-heavy weights, short set, muscle mass. I do 5x5 sets for that though which seems to work for me. I wish i had done more of the heavy sets when i built my base cause now im on that plateau and my weight isnt going anywhere (stuck right at 135!!! aggg)

It is much easier to build muscle during the winter and lose fat during the summer. It takes alot more time and energy to lose fat than build muscle.

i agree...the body actually sees the muscle as a liability since it takes so much energy to run extra muscle so its not very happy about building more of it. Remember only in rencent history food has been so easily accesible for the most of us....for over a million years, even before the paleolithic era, humans had to face often periods of starvation, large muscles would've been a huge liability during those periods, therfore the DNA has adapted accordingly. Only a few hundert thousand years of constantly available food or artificial manipulation of the DNA can change that.

On the other hand it only takes only calorie deficiency to start burning up the fat reserves. The trick is to make sure the body doesn't start eating away at the muscle too.

What I meant was ill still be hitting the weights during the winter to keep and gain some muscle but ill also be mixing it up with cardio to lose the excess fat I gotten over the summer. I know what im doing, plus my body has a tendency of losing fat really fast..... I gotta love my genes. :)
