i need help w/ my 71 duster

i am re building a 71 duster for my SR project and my most current problem is my voltage amp reader is reading +20 so its over charging and melting the red wire if i unhook the alternator it doesnt burn the red wire if i unhook the alternator the car runs just off the batt. is it somthing to do with the voltage regulator???
