In Progress: X-Men RX8

Hi,
This is my first model. After finding this forum and reading many threads I've been motivated to try this out for myself. I recently purchased the Fujimi Aero Mazda RX8, and I plan to turn it into the RX8 you may have seen in the second X-Men movie. Here (http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/xmen_images.jpg) are some reference images. As I said, I'm a newbie so any comments/advice you offer will be greatly appreciated.
So far all I've done is body work. Here's where I'm at:
First I cut out the fog lights area
before/after
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/001.jpg http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/002.jpg
Then I cut out the bottom section of the rear fender
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/003.jpg
Then I cut out the side grill areas
before/after
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/004.jpg http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/005.jpg
Front fender temporarily mounted
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/006.jpg
Overview
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/007.jpg
Then I began to modify the side skirts
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jil8/008.jpg
After the putty dries I'm going to sand down the body and then get it ready for its first coat of primer. I'll post more pics after the first coat of primer has dried.

I don't know. I still think its looks really cool. I plan to use blue flocking to make the seats.
How were you able to see that it said Ford Racing??....its so tiny.

all this confusion started JUST because of the seat appear one similiar logo that looks like ford...but have you ever think before maybe the person who say it is ford logo is wrong...maybe it aint a ford logo...the picture is not good enough to explain anything as it is too SMALL....the logo is oval but it cant be determined as ford...if want to determine what is that maybe we can get our hands on the seat company 1st....
and to what i know between japanese car companies and western car companies only honda and acura are involved...IF mazda is owned by ford or what so ever...why cant i see ford cars appearing on japanese auto salon like NSX??????explanation???

Well, call me crazy, but it sure as hell looks like the blue oval with
FORD
racing on it.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/98589xmen_images.jpg
Also, at the top of the seat it says SVT
BTW, on my web page, when I opened it, I let the mouse sit on it, and a box appeared. At the bottom right hand corner, it was grey with a small picture inside and blue arrows pointing outwards, so I clicked it, and that made everything HUGE!

NO, Mazda is not owned by Ford, they merged about 20-30 years ago. but Ford does not own them. Ford has no control what Mazda Exectutives do, aka, the RX-8. Ford did nothing to help Mazda in producing that car. but the next generation Focus (2005? in the U.S.) is a Mazda 3. and Mazda and Ford worked together to produce this car. The new Ford Futura is a Mazda 6, the Mazda Tribute is a Ford Escape. The Ford ZX2 is all Mazda, based on an MX6 I believe.

Gasman is right. There are no clear ownership ties. But the car companies have merged. The old Probe and MX-6 were identical in all aspects besides bodywork and interior, for example. They work together, just like Mitsubishi and Chrysler did. (Remember the Eagle brand? They were just rebadged Mitsubishis.)
Keep in mind, most car companies are somehow incorporated into a big, mega company. Ford also has ties to Jaguar, Aston Martin and maybe Rover and another company on the continent? Chrysler merged with Daimler, and now many features found on Mercedes are making their way into Chryslers (Including Dodge and Plymouth).
The ONLY Japanese carmakers that stand alone are Toyota and Honda. Do not confuse Honda/Acura relationship with the sort of relationship that Mazda/Ford have. Acura is nothing more than a marketing brand for the North American continent. All they do is stick a different badge and name on it, and bam, Acura. RSX = Integra. EL = Civic. NSX = NSX. Acura is not a "western" company, just a name.

nice work, i am wondering why no one has tried the xmen rx8 before now.
anyway, great work on the body, looks good so far.
as for the ford racing, if you look the side window doesn't even look anything like the rx8 window, it looks more like a supra window, and it doesn't really look like the rx8 interior. maybe its just me.
keep up the good work!

So the interior in the picture may not be the one from the movie. Infact, I'm almost positive its not because the steering wheel is on the right, and in the movie its on the left. I also found pics and the interior looks mostly gray. But I think the blue interior is nicer anyways, so even if its not the exact one that's what I'm going to model mine after.

sounds like a good plan to me! the blue one looks more suited for an xmen car anyways.

"Ford Motor Company offers a wealth of variety to the automotive consumer. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we are in a position to appeal to the widest range of potential customers. Each of our automotive brands has a unique personality and holds a distinct place in the Ford Motor Company family." this along with the names on Ford.com lead me to think that they own the others. And I know that after ford got jag the quality has gone down dramatically. Although Austin has kept it up it was part of the merger that they could and would precede to act as there own company and don’t haft to make changes.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread. I have a habit of doing that, and not talking about the model the thread was about. Your RX-8 is looking awesome. Very ambitious for your first (right?) project. I hope the modifications help hide Fujimi's odd proportions. Can't wait to see more progress!

I love that car from the first time I ever layed eyes on it. In spite of Fujimi's "odd proportions", as willimo said, and by the looks of it, I'm sure you'll achieve a great model.

For those of you still interested, I finally got all of my supplies in the mail. I put a coat of gray primer on the car and also did a little more body work. Here are some pictures:

I have to order some grooved styrene to make an intercooler. Until I do that I think I'm going to work on the rear fender and spoiler. Unfortunately spraying the prime inside was a bad idea. Smelled up my place bad. So if the weather stays cold I may not get another coat of primer on it any time soon.
Anyone know where I can get some wheels for this. I want them to look as close to the real thing as possible. Even if I have to add some putty and cut some pieces away. Thanks, oh and let me know what you think so far.

I don't have any new pics yet, but here's what I've been doing. I put some putty around the pieces I made to fit in the grill area so I can round out the corners a little and make it look like one piece instead of 3 pieces of styrene glued together. (I used regular filer putty for this.) While I'm letting that dry I ebgan work on the wing. For this I took the spoiler that came with the kit and flipped it upside down and turned it 180 degrees. Then I put a piece of styrene on each end and put putty on the outside. (For this I used Tamiya polyester putty.) The instructions on how to use it aren't in english so I was just going by what the picture showed. I mixed one part of the big tube and one party of the little tube. It was very runny, so I added more hardener, and it still wasnt' very putty-like. So I added more hardener. It still didn't get very manageable, but I was able to get some to stick on the wing. Does anyone know why I couldn't get the putty to become more manageable??
Stay tuned for more updates!!

Here's a little update:
I glued the front and rear fenders on and filled in gaps with putty and did a little sanding. I decided to make an intercooler so I had to cut away part of the front fender. I'll have to get some slotted styrene to make the intercooler. I aslo began work on the wing and exhaust areas. Here are some pics....more to come soon.
