hey folks, im just curious... having an aftermarket intake system will comsume more gas than the oem one? because eversince i installed one, the car is suckin up fuel like a mofo. I'm using 87 octane. having an market intake will give more ponies, more mileage and gas efficient from what i hear... along with a performance muffler.

things like that DO increase gas mileage.

its just that when people install parts like that on their cars, they start to become heavy footed because they enjoy the new sound, and the increased performance. Drive like you did before you installed those parts, and you'll see that you actually did increase your gas mileage.

ive tried driving like i did before, believe me... i drive accordingly to what's best for fuel economy in the manual book which is to shift at 14mph from 1st to 2nd, 25mph from 2nd to 3rd, 40mph from 3rd to 4th, and 49 from 4th to 5th... the rpm will drop to 2, 500 at every shift - "it will give you the best fuel economy and effective emissions control"

increase in air volume means the computer will add more fuel to burn properly. if your plugs, wires, aren't in good condition to burn the added fuel/air then that could be the cause of poor gas mileage.

also your oxygen sensor might not give back the proper signal, telling the ECU to increase or decrease fuel, messing up the proper ratio.

did you reset the ECU when you installed it, if it has been a hundred miles or so, then the ECU should have adjusted itself for the extra air already.

exhaust restriction can also be the cause because it works harder to push the extra air out, partially clogged cat?

also what kind of intake did you install? a cold air intake is best that sucks air outside the engine bay, an open air intake that sucks up hot air in the engine bay doesn't work good.

how do i reset the ECU? what plugs, or wires are you referring to? if the oxygen sensor doesnt give me the proper signal...what may be wrong with it?
all i have is a HP racing performance muffler replaced with the oem one... with a no name two pieces intake system (but made short ram due to rain) with a K & N filter off an AEM short ram.

unplug your battery and let it sit for a while (about 10 mins) and the ecu should be reset.

you can reset by disconnecting battery for a couple minutes (you'll lose radio memory, clock) or by removing a certain fuse (forgot which one). for a couple minutes. Read a manuel. This should be done after installing mods so the ECU can refresh and adjust. Even if you don't reset, as you drive it will detect and adjust by itself. some people prefer to reset the ECU because it is faster than letting the car adjust itself.

if your spark plugs and ignition wires, distrubutor cap and rotors are in poor condition, with the added air flow and fuel, it will increase the likely hood of a poor spark and result in less efficient burn. that means poor gas milage. just check and replace if necessary.

oxygen sensor over time can get damage by wrong additives in gasoline, that's why some bottles say its oxygen sensor safe. overtime by age regardless, it loses accuracy at measuring and also cause high exhaust emissions. i wouldn't worry about it unless you also have high emissions or running too rich or too lean.

you can also try a safe fuel injector cleaner like chevron or STP name brands, to clear deposits which can increase mileage.

improved fuel claims from intakes are overrated anywayz and in newer cars like honda s2000 you can actually lose mileage because OEM ones are more efficient designed. also brand names like AEM actually dyno tune their intakes compared to less known ones which might be more restrictive because of inferior designs.

anywayz just make sure your car is in good running condition overall, i think a lot of people do lose mileage and there are people who gain some. Every car is different. if it doen'st get better at least your car is faster!

for sure reset the ecu. the octane boosters and such that harm the O2 sensors are the ones that say "for off-road use"
