yeah i smelled the same thing when i first go it, ive had it for 4 weeks (1500 miles) and i havent smelled it for like 2 weeks now, so i think its a new engine smell or something, i also would smell it when i would accidentally leave the clutch in (new stick driver) ive gotten alot better and havent done that either so im guessing its just the smell of a new engine

how many miles are on your engines and how hard have you driven them? i think that smell is from running the engine a little too hard too soon. that break in period is really important. my guess is that the engine isn't/wasn't properly lubricated and broken in at the time, so there's probably more friction and rubbing going on in there. otherwise, it could just be the engine running really rich, rotaries are real good at that. it may also have been that bit of oil that rotaries burn, or a combination of all of that.

by the way, rx-8s are not as fast as you may think, they are great cars, but they are definetly lacking. they feel absolutely wonderful, and are fast compared to a lot of sedans. I have a feeling this may be your first "fast" car. try this, jsut for kicks:
get a suit, shave, fix your hair, get a gold watch and some business cards with a fake phone# and e-mail. go to a bmw dealership. tell them you've just been promoted, and you need a new ride, and are really interested in teh M3, that you've heard a lot about it, but you have to see it for yourself. ask them for a testride. hopefully they won't be too anal about it and you'll get to drive it. this will give you a good comparison between fast and not as fast. once you're done, pretend like you were unimpressed, give them your fake business card (make sure it has your real name cuz they make a photo copy of ur licence) and tell them you'll think about it.
you can do this with many cars, i've done this with the s2000, rsx type-s, rx-8, and my next target shall be a corvette. You really need to drive more cars to understand why a lot of people are somewhat disapointed with the rx-8, so don't judge them because they say the car is slow.

that smell is the anti-corrosion film they spray all over the car that prevents the sea salts and bird crap durring shipment from hurting the car, they spray it on the engien, body, and underside. it can sometimes take upto 2500 miles to burn off the engien. if your that worried about it, wash your engien bay.
