4WD warning Light

When I select 4WD (High or Low) the in-dash warning light does NOT illuminate. The light does not illuminate when the ignition is in the 'on' position and the engine not running also. I am not sure that 4WD is 'selecting' properly. Changing the 4WD lever from 2WD to 4WDH requires a fair amount of pressure as well (much easier going from 4WDH to 2WD). Any input on solving the problem would be greatly appreciated.
