I stopped fast, putting the transmission in reverse, wouldn't move, waited alittle while, then it worked fine ,shifts good, sounds fine but when you put it in park or neutal and back to drive it does't work.Let it sit and eventualy it works again.Any cheap fixs?

You didn't say what year or engine this was so the transmission could be identified. Have you tried it in D? If this is a first generation, operation in D is different than OD. Also how is the operation in manual 1 & 2 and reverse.

Sorry,It's a 92 explorer , 4.0 engine ,when it decides to work you can here it engage, reverse seems to work first. When it doesn't work, you won't feel it engage in any gear.I slid thur a stop sign, putting it in reverse in a hurry if that helps.

Your post isn't much help. I need to know exactly hoe it operates in the individual gears. D is very different than OD. It is possible that the vehicle would move in D and not OD. I need to know what it does in each gear on the column in order to identify possible problems. Please write a couple of sentences on EACH position.

Doubt it could be filter problem as this is just a screen. Have you checked fluid level when it is running in park? This does not sound like a common mechanical problem. I just have to ask why you didn't use the brakes? Could this be a mechanical problem in the brakes that causes the vehicle not to move? When the vehicle does move, does it operate normally for a while?

Took it out again OD doesn't work at all.It didn't shift right once , after moving it from park to drive afew times it engaged again.Ran it in 1st then 2nd and drive ,shifts up and down fine just wouldn't start or shift into OD.When I have trouble in drive, it seems to slip or want to move when I start, There is a noise , like air leaking coming from the back driver side corner where the washer fluid ,jack ete... are, when I apply the brakes. To answer your other ? I was sliding on the snow packed road with the brakes applied.I'm going in tommarrow to change fluid as it hasn't been serviced for quite awhile. If you have any other idea's I'm all ears...Thanks

My biggest concern is that in going to reverse, it got extended into park which can do a lot of damage when the parking pawl engages.

When the lever is in the OD position, there is a mechanical OD one way clutch that transfers power. This can slip and not allow forward movement.

When the lever is in the D position, the OD one clutch (different part) transfers power instead. This clutch operates in reverse manual 1 & 2 and all three auto gears when in D.

Forward clutch operates in all forward gears.

Reverse is made from low band and high clutch (3rd).

By process of elimination it is sometimes possible to determine which component is defective.

My advice is to work on the simplest problem first. The noise in the back may be the problem. Might be something in the differential not transfering power. That noise there is very unusual. With the tranny in park and the wheels blocked, jack up a rear wheel and see if it turns.

O.H When vehicle is jacked up the wheels turn in park. The noise comes and goes coming from inside the rear window resevior compartment, with the brakes applied.Sounds like a vacuem leak or air leak.

In the 92 the wheel well only contains the rear washer motor and the control box for the 4WD. never heard them making noise. The transfer case for the 4WD does have a neutral position. Could be that it is on the edge of engaging. You are looking for someone to tell you "Replace this, it allways goes bad." That isn't going to happen. You need to get dirty and do some diagnostics.
