Nothing rare about this setup. Someone just took a filter and stuck it at the end of the Fduct.
Probably is hurting performance more then helping since it is so close to the motor and has no heat shielding.

I would have to agree with Ripn12s on this one if its gaining him anything at all its barely anything, And technically that is not a cold air intake its more like a short ram because its just taking hot air off the engine because there is no heat shield. Most cold airs go to the lower half of the car like down in the bumper or somthing like that. But if u have a spare filter laying around and u want to try it i garuntee it will be loud as hell but u probably will not notice anything performance related

This is not a CAI. To be a CAI the cone shoule be shielded from the engine. Usually a non heat conducting material open air box should do it. In this case he is asspirating air at the same temp the OEM air box would deliver. The car might breat a little easier but no CAI bennefits there.

Yeah that thing is jsut sucking up engine heat. Its more like a HAI. You could build around it though, or just get some supplies and build a FWI.

Correct, you coould make an acrilic enclosure or made it out of any other non heat conducting material.
