Fuel Rail...

A question popped up and I only knew how to answer half of it... someone asked me what a fuel rail does and HOW it does it. I told her obviously that it delivers fuel to the injectors.

Can anyone answer me the "how" part?

Fuel rail is hollow.

Fuel is liquid.

Fuel pressure applied to the end of the rail is provided to all outlets in the body.

Demonstration is by toothpaste tube.

A fuel rail is just a pipe that runs from the gas tank to all the injectors.
In a modern car, an electric pump sends the gasoline from the tank to all the injectors.
Beside the injectors is a fuel pressure regulator. This allows some of the gasoline to go back to the gas tank in a seperate pipe. However, the regulator only lets gas go back to the tank if the pressure in the rail gets above a certain pressure (approx. 30 psi). So the fuel rail always has a constant pressure of fuel in it, when the car is running.
