Actually, rotary engines were designed by the germans. Wankel is the name of the dude that invented them. They first appeared in NSU's. NSU went out of buisness because of the rotary engine's apex seal. NSU provided a great warranty for their cars, and all the seals on the Ro80 (sweet looking car) went out at around 30k miles. They had to replace them all, and went out of buisness. Before eating it, they designed a front wheel drive drivetrain and sold it to VW. It became the heart of the Golf. NSU went on to be a part of Auto Union, or, Audi.

And Mustangs are just fine. They're basically a big, unbalanced haichi roku with some torque. The mustang we know now (pre '05), has Mac struts and a four link rear. My stepdad has one, and he is the most anal retentive do-it-yourselfer suspension modder I know. Most weekends he's out there in the garage with plumb bobs and various other tools disecting his suspension. If you want to know why the mustang sucks for handling, or why it's good, I could probably tell you. Sometimes it impresses me, and sometimes I see why people say they suck. Just like any other car.

so yeah back on topic, i think that given a budget only for driftin, then i'd choose an Rx-7 (any year) because of the good weight distrubution and decent aftermarket support (ie racing beat). plus there hasnt been a bad looking rx7 yet.

I drove my friends 510 once... it reminded me of a VW Bug...

For god's sake, the two cars handle completely differently, with perhaps ONE vague similarity - a propensity to roll oversteer when pushed hard, in both cases due to the primitive nature of the rear suspensions. Though decent springs, shocks and 'bars should sort that.

after doing some research, i think the reason the miata can not hold long drifts is because of such a small wheel base.... am i right?

thats what has been made with a rotary engine, none of which many people have even herd of, and none of which produced a sports car or anything recently really(I believe Lada was the last one in like 1998) so basically when it comes down to it mazda is the only company that makes a rotary that matters to us... why must you be 2 and try to act like your so all knowning as if I didn't know this already?
