Grand AM with lots of problems

I have a 93 Grand Am that has some issues:
On the negative battery cable, there is a small wire that runs from
the frame and piggybacks into the neg cable just before the
connection to the battery. There is no insulation left on this wire
as sometimes when I start the car, it burns off.
The car always stalls when put in reverse(unless you give it some
gas and then drop it in gear), and sometimes when put in drive.
When you are driving down the street, it will stall and then
restart.
When you come to a stop, it will occasionally stall.
These things have been going on for about a month now. I took it to a mechanic and was told nothings wrong. So I got a second opinion, and a can of Seafoam was put in. It seemed to help a little. I did replace the battery three days ago as that was bad.
And as of just today, it cranks but will not start.
Any help on any of the problems will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Your starter is trying to find ground. It should ground to the block, then thru the neg. battery cable to the battery. It can't ground thru the large cable, tries thru the small cable and then the smoke starts. Replace the neg cable, make sure connections are clean. This should fix prob. 1-post again and we will go from there.
