remote starter AND 01 SE

Hey, two quick questions. First off, my girlfriend had a sunfire which was totaled in an accident, her prestige remote starter was fine and taken out. Apparently it is a universal remote starter and can be installed in her new car. She is probably getting an '01 grand am SE early next week. I was just wondering how reliable you would all rate this car. My friends have 2 84 trans ams, mutliple sunfires, and one mid-90s grand prix, they all seem to be ok. I was just wondering if there are any chronic problems with the grand ams. I've read around and seen moderate reviews, but was just wondering what all of your experiences were. 2ndly, do any of you have experience installing a Prestige remote starter. I am debating doing it myself if I get the time. I've managed to install head units and turbo timers with instructions, so I was just wondering if any of you had instructions for Prestige or any basic car starter installation, and how difficult it is. Thanks in advance, Geoff

Well, 1st I hate the Prestige remote starters. I tried selling them but had too many come back. As far as the G-am being a good car or not, I think those are fairly solid cars. Friend has a '02 SE that I installed a DEI starter on it and neither has had anything major. I personally would stay away from messing with the remote starter idea and this car. Not that this car is overly hard but is a little difficult. You have to get the ignition wires behind the radio and then you have Passlock to attend to. You being not too familiar with RS systems, I wouldn't try to learn on this car.

ok, thanks for the advice. I had heard similar things from a few friends, who had installed/attempted their own. I wish I had known that the Prestige was not a good brand to go with prior to the fact. Unfortunantly, her parents got the starter for her as a Christmas present. If you don't mind me asking, what was the reason that most people gave for returning them? thanks for your advice.

Well, it was any number of things. Some would just stop working, some lost range, most of them were remote problems. I even had one that melted itself to the car!!!!
