Ok I've been looking for a good cold air intake for my 03 wolfsburg jetta 1.8t. I have a few in mind (neuspeed, AEM, etc.) but I want to find the one that offers the best bang for my buck. Any suggestions?

K&N typhoon..best out there, got one and it added 10hp and 10ftlbs. Read the directions before installing...they have you removing the whole battery assembly just to move a wiring harness about an inch...this may not be necessary. The intake tube wraps around the outer edge of the battery and heads straight down from there. View the clearance before you waste an hour removing the battery.

You still have 2 remove the battery to remove the inlet pipe to the airbox because its clipped to the headlight housing which cant be unclipped unless the battery/ tray are removed.

true..very true.. my mistake..either way it's worth the time, $$$$ and effort for the gained hp and torque.

cold air intakes arent good for euros, the K&N typhoon is the best, but im telling you these cars get so hot its amazing, you may even loose horses. the only reason to own a cold air/ram intake on a euro is because it has a nice throaty sound, and with a muffler , it sounds like thunder and can be heard blocks away. there are some potential risks for using them on these cars. since the filter is so close it may let more warm air into the engine instead of cold when its really hot. after driving on the freeway for 30 mins at about 70 mph youll quickly see you had more power or the same power with a regular filter. not to mention if you use a by pass valve you may not get any hp. you may want to use a by pass valve, to be on the safe side. now you can use a K&N drop in filter, i have one on my car and i like it. it does make a pretty big difference, well....50 buks worth. do your resarch on google and stuff and then make up your mind. you dont wanna have one of these on your jetta while on the track waaay to hot

I and my dyno couldn't disagree with you more. If I ever get my scanner working again I'll scan the sheets from before and after the installation. I put a Typhoon in my Jetta and gained 11hp and 9ft/lbs of torque..my car never runs over 180F. You can get a 5hp boost just from the K&N drop in but if you want a performance enhancement you can really feel go with the Typhoon.

11 hp from a cold intake, thats really good, ive known cooler running cars that have gained 3 or 4. even less from a by pass valve. thats really good, i have never known any one who gained 11 horses even on jap. or amer. thats insane

K&N claims 10hp and 10ft/lbs so it's not like it's a secret or something...I have two friends who very similar results. Besides that loss of power you're talking about comes from heat soak in the intercooler..got nothing to do with the intake. Besides where the intake filter is located there's no chance of heat from the engine having any affect on the air being drawn in. As a matter of fact the front bumper spoiler on a jetta actually directs air flow in front of the car precisely to the filter on the Typhoon intake.

well, its a personal thing. i don't use them because i dont believe placing an ovular filter closer to the engine lets more cold air in. on a humid day, if you tell me after running high rpms at 70 80 90 mph on a track, the filter wont let more warm air then a k&n drop in then im convinced, ill go buy one, i had a bad exp. with a coa on parents 87 jetta. when humid and hot as it always tends to be in atlanta weather, personally would stick with drop in.

by the way i never had this problem on a civic or a tercel, but i have on 87 jetta, 97 golf gls, 99 golf 00 jetta, that is why i made the assumption euro cars get hotter then jap. cars or american. but from my exp. euros do tend to get a tad bit warmer then other cars

with other models..especially AEM, I agree the placement of the filter is too close to the engine..but with the Typhoon..and on 00-02 jettas the filter is placed around and below the battery..you can't get much further away from the engine than that in those engine compartments. But yeah I also agree that it's a personal choice..just letting you know that I've had nothing but awesome results with it. But also if you have a 00-04 jetta I can't recommend enough taking it to APR and having them do a direct port programming on it. If it's a 1.8t..you'll get a boost of 75hp and I can't remember the torque increase off the top of my head but it's significant. The whole package cost $650(around Xmas time) and I don't know of anything that costs that little that will give you that much increase in performance.

To tell you the truth..I don't know..but think you might hear it a bit..but not nearly as pronounced with the cold air intake..
