MK2 Jetta Starter Removal

Has anybody succeeded in removing the starter from a MK2 Jetta...Im open to suggestions. Also,, I was wondering if anybody knows how to get the hood hinges off the car, Or a way to hinge the hood from the front of the car.

I bought a 6" long 8mm hex socket just for that.
