Turbo JDM H22a??

I'm planning on buying a 99 Prelude Type SH and I want to know if I can use turbos that are made for the USDM H22, I would also like to know what turbos are best for either the USDM or JDM engine and what type of horsepower gains I can expect. Thanks a lot.

the type sh is a usdm car so im not sure what youre exactly talking about when you ask: can i use turbos for the usdm h22.

thats probably cuz i didnt include all the information that i wanted too, i am thinking about buying the prelude and swapping the engine with a JDM engine, so would parts i buy for the usdm h22 work on the jdm h22, also what are all the bottom end engine parts i would need to replace on either engine to get more boost, thanks for the help

youre talking about close to $5000 for the swap and another couple grand (at least) to build up the JDM motor and then another few grand to turbo it.
good advice: build up the motor you have, and turbo it. im not a big supporter of turboing the h22 anyway. maybe you have logical answers to these questions (or a fat ass wallet)...until then, you still arent making a whole heck of alot of sense...

i guess i just want to make a high horsepower daily driver, something i can take to work everyday but also to the track on the weekends to put down some good times

the h22 is a great motor with tons of potential, its got thin cylender walls (bad for boost) and is begging for a nice solid low end buildup. let the b-series guys turbo the hell out of their engines. if youre planning on spending that much money then put it into the engine youve got already, after you build the motor to about 300 n/a hp you wont be sorry.

well thank you for all your help, but i am a novice in enigine buildup also, so what type of things should i be looking for to build up the H22 and how much am i looking at money wise, i dont have a fat wallet, i want to be able to do this in stages

well first I'd get your internals done.. high compression pistons, forged piston rods, forged cylinder sleeves, valves, replace valve springs with higher rating (titanium if you can afford them), and higher rated valve ends, get your crankshaft balanced, shot-peened and blueprinted, tuned camshafts (to match compression and breath of your "new" engine) make sure your oil pump is in good condition (you can install cylinder oil jets if you want, and you probably do). check to make sure all engine bearings are good, replace them with higher quality ones if you want top-notch performance. replace stock flywheel with a lightweight flywheel for faster revs. Replace stock clutch (for control of higher HP to the ground). get a programmable ECU (hondata, AEM "EMS"). run on high grade fuel (102+ Octane) if you can get it easily enough, or run supreme pump gas. and you will be putting some good power to the ground.. I know there's more specifics, but that's a basic rundown of what you're gonna have to do.. but I'll tell you these are'nt cheap to do (about $3000 for internals), and look to have the car out of commission while the car is in the shop for the clutch, flywheel, and internals. As for the rest of it I leave it up to you, or if someone else wants to add to this.

ok, thanks again for your help, but how much of this can i do myself, and do i have to do all of it all at once or can i do it in logical stages so that i can do it as i get the money, i have a good mechanical know-how and i would like to do as much as possible but i dont want to screw anything up either

About 300hp is all you're gonna get if you go N/A. The h22 can't go much past that cause of a timing belt issue and big cams. One thing you can do is go with N/A and a big 100-200 shot of nitrous. With a built engine, it will handle being sprayed pretty well. Personally though, if you wanna make big power, it can easily be done with a turbo. I'm shooting for around 500-600 at the wheels on my h22. The thin cylinder wall thing isn't that big of a problem. I know of a guy making 700+whp with his h22. Sleeving the block is the answer and for you, since it's an open deck, go with darton sleeves. With me, mine has a closed deck and I also know someone else that's making 569whp on a non sleeved h22. The great thing about turbos though is, I can always turn the boost down and it doesn't even have to have boost unless I get on it. I'll get better gas mileage and I'll still be able to smoke you anytime I like.

well i also own a preldue but its a 4th gen SI with 130000 miles. id leik to swap in a h22. my question i guess is if i uprgraded inetrnal son my h23 would i be fine or would i still have reliabilty problems. i jus see teh h23 as being more easily turbocharged. help me out here ive basically got 1500$ saved and in 2 months ill be a lil above two grand so i am makin plans now so i know what i am workin towards. thanks any info is helpful

Well, you need to think of a couple things first, how much power do you wanna make and what for? Also, 1,500.00 could get you a cheap kit, but you won't make a whole lot of power on it without doing some internal work. Just to give you a rough estimate, my pistons and rods for my h22 were 1,300.00 alone. They were having a special too, or it would have been more. :) My valves, springs and retainers were 825.00. The sleeves I believe will be another couple hundred, haven't gotten a price back on what I want, but then I have to get the block sleeved and machined and the head ported and ground. I don't think you will have the money or willingness to do all of this, but that gives you some of an idea. For just my engine, I'm looking at around 6k. Then I still have to get the turbo, intercooler, piping, standalone ecu and all the rest. If you save up around 3 grand though, you have a pretty decent setup making reliable hp.

well id like to run low 13's someday, im more realistic than some people, im am jus tryin to decide if i could turbo my h23 after i replaced some of the engine components. i am wondering if i could still have a good reliablilty for daily driver. if the h23 has to many miles on it then ill jus swap in an h22 when i get enough cash. then prolly a jrsc instead of turbo. jus wondering mostly if my h23 could still do the trick . . . btw no major enigine problems ever with it. thanks

For the power you are wanting, reliability shouldn't be a problem. As far as mileage, if you are going to replace some of the engine, then it won't matter how many miles you have. Really for the times you are wanting, you don't really have to do that much to it. Heck with good tuning, you can get that on a stock block, but I'm sure the rings are getting to the point of no return so it's best to just throw in some inexpensive forged pistons and rods. Maybe new valves and springs, but I don't really think it would be necessary, maybe take a look at he head and see if anything needs replaced while you are doing the block.
You are only talking about making 250-300hp at the wheels I'm pretty sure. Like I said, you should be able to get that on stock internals with good tuning, but best thing to do is just replace these things now, cause if you drive it like most people do, you'll probably be blowing your engine soon afterwards.:)

Hey got a question ive got a 98 civic with h22a was wondering what exhaust would fit ie 98 civic or 97 prelude the preludes chassis is 3 inches longer then the civics. I dont know if u did ur exhaust yet but im just looking for a lil help.

Just so you know, they don't make a supercharger for the 4th gen, and the modifications needed to make the JRSC fit in the 4th gen is apparently not anywhere near worth the time and money.

I was thinking of turboing my JDM h22, but decided it wouldn't be with the time and money.. decided to go spray instead.. more then enough power for that motor.

To do the Turbo don't you have to remove the ATTS option from the SH's that also is OBD-2?

I believe so, but it's not as easy as just removing it. I read a few things a month or so ago about it, and I can't remember what you had to do.

If you happen to have that article that would be greatly appreciated as my friend has a 98 Lude SH with the H22 and the ATTS with OBD-2... I have heard using GSR ECU should be able to take it down to OBD-1 although not sure about that one...

hey i got an 04 civic dx non-vtec 1.7........ i have been looking around and toying with the idea of replacing that with a JDM H22a DOHC VTEC Engine (97-00) that comes out of the the prelude originally in japan..... anybody that knows the h22 engine.......go there and tell me if you think i will need anything else for the swap besides what is already listed......or any other swap possibilities........ i am very open right now on choosing the engine... i just want around 200 hp after the swap......i don't want to have an an extremely huge amount of power.... but i want more than what is there now..... any info give it to me .........
