Could possibly be the sending unit to the gauge, a faulty oil pump, or a faulty gauge itself.
First thing you should check is if the oil pressure warning light is activated. If so, Check the oil level before you drive the vehicle, then take it to a reputable mechanic. Actually, with this type of problem, it is always better safe than sorry, so the mechanic is the way to go.
Hope that helps a little, and good luck.

Have a look at This thread (http://www.lincolnsonline.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=24&t=000231) on another board, there's some good clues there.

My mom's 91 continental does exactly the same. A couple years ago she took it to a gas station in AZ and they swapped the engine with less than 60K miles at about $4400.
Its not the sender. Its not the pump. Its not the engine. Its a fault in the computer which runs the instrument panel.
Now if someone could tell us how to disable the damn chime, we could have some peace.

I have a 93 lincoln continental and it does the same thing the only thing that you can do is disable the warning bell for it and that is on driver side under the dash but there is a catch too.
when you take out that bell you take out all of those bells cheek engine, low washer ,low oil and etc.........
I hope that this helps

I have a 1992 Lincoln Continental I purchased private sale from a salesman at a dealership. My oil guage does the same thing...along with the annoying beeping that goes with it. It does it alot in the summer...and never in the winter. The seller told me he had it on the diagnostics machine a dozen times and it was finally determined it was the computer head. He told me if it got to annoying he could get me one for about 100 bucks, but that it wasn't hurting anything to leave it for the time being.
Just keep an eye on your fluids and check it regularly.
The car came with a 2 inch file of maintainence records so I know it was well cared for.
Hope this helps.

My wifes would have an erradic oil level... digital dash... we had it checked out and it is the dash cluster itself that is the problem that might be yours.... does it ever show lines on top and on bottom but not in middle(digi dash)? I have heard that the dash has been a problem.
