You can always rebuild. Unless you want a pristine car.
I would consider the price vs. the condition of the car. Ask if the previous owner still has all of his receipts; its a sign that the car was carefully taken car of. Just keep an eye open on things wrong with the car when you test it out.

In general, thats not to many miles on an engine. The key is condition. If the owner takes good care of a car then you'll get 200000 out of it easy. If they didn't then it'll break down before then.

That's to many miles. Don't even attempt to purchase the car.... especially when you don't even know anything about the original owner.

ahh... but what constitutes as "taken good care of"??? like say a VR-4 with about 100k-140k or so, like the one he mentioned, what types of maintenance would need to be done on a car with that many miles in order to keep it in "solid" running condition, so u can easily take it up to 200k????

Regular maintenance: changing spark plugs when they should be changed, changing the air filter when it should be changed, regular oil changes... A good indication is if he's kept all the reciepts to the things he's done to his car. Another is if he knows alot about the car; not always a sure indication that the car has been taken car of, but at least the owner spent time and care to know his own car.
I'm sour on Mitsu motors, my 96 TSI AWD Talon was a little over 100k and was already starting to go. The previous owner had neglected any sort of maintenance at all. And drove it hard in the process. Damn kids.
