2000 Golf radio hum after battery replaced.

I just had the battery replaced on my 2000 Golf GLS and when I turn on the radio all I get is a crackle and then some humming.

It's not displaying the "safe" message so it doesn't need the code to be entered. It appears from the display to be functioning...I can choose a cd or FM/AM and then select tracks or preset stations, however, all the sound I get is the disturbing hum. I have the monsoon stereo option.

Any ideas?

Also, the dash lights for the heater dial, fan speed dial, and vent selector dial are out. The fuses are okay, are these lights difficult to replace? Any idea where I can find instructions?

Will the cd player produce a hum or is it only on the radio bands. A corroded antenna ground will commonly cause loss of radio signals. As to the heater lights, there is one bulb behind the center dial that lights them all. Pull off (it's on kinda snug) the dial knob and you will see the small bulb. The safest way to get it out is to slip a piece of rubber tubing over it & pull it out, it's widely available.

There is no sound from CDs or radio stations, in both cases all I get is crackle, pop, and hum. Changing between CD and radio sources has no impact almost as if they're not plugged into the amp/speakers.

That's a new one to me. I've heard about failures where they don't work at all (just the theft light). The radio stores diagnostic codes which can be read through the car's data link connector using a VW scanner or equivalent. The radio won't ask for the code because it talks with the ECM of the car & knew it was in the same vehicle. You might try entering the code anyway. If you get any codes post them & I can try to help.

well the sterio and cigatette lighter and dash lights share a common ground or circuit i believe. if there is a short in the lights or something is blown, then you can get a ground hum. if you replace the light and check your battery ground that may work. mmmmmmmaybe the battery ground connection isn't on all the way?

Well, the radio started working and I've identified the source of the problem. The driver's side door speaker is either blown or the connection is shorting.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement speaker?

Smart ass replies aside...

With the Monsoon system installed VW has locked owners out of simply speaker replacements. Apparently the impedence of the speakers installed is higher than standard auto speakers, making it a much easier load for the Monsoon amplifier. Replacing just one speaker with an off-the-shelf unit from Best Buy would fry that amp channel. A very helpful Best Buy tech shared this with me from his own experience.

Back to my original question, anyone know where I could get a OEM VW speaker (other than the overpriced dealer).
