Evo 16g setup...

I'm lookin into this kit for my turbo upgrade.

I will probably be getting the evo manifold to go along with it. What else am I going to need to get to make this setup work safely? Should I keep saving and buy the FMIC with the kit instead of risking it with the side mount?

I have a profec b and greddy turbo timer. ngk plugs, and an injen intake. Full greddy hard intercooler piping and a type-s BOV. Also have a 3 inch apex n1 cat back. Purchased a walbro 190 but haven't installed it.

Will I need the 255 or can I stick with the 190 without worrying about fuel cut? Or would I be better just goin with the 255 and upgrade the injectors and get an apex s-afc?

I'm shootting for 350-400 hp. What else am I going to need to achieve this? I've looked at the setups on dsmtuner.com but they are pretty vauge. Any suggestions and info is greatly appreciated.

if you upgrade the fuel pump to the 255 and get bigger injectors i would suggest getting DSMlink instead of the S-AFC... then you can get bigger injectors and never need to worry about it again, if you just want to run the S-AFC then the 190 should be fine if you get bigger injectors, probably about 660s i would say, i'm sure Keving will say i am way off but thats they way i would do it (go with the DSMlink, 255 pump, and about 720 or 880cc injectors, just so i will never need to worry about them again!) well good luck

I recomend the 255 fuel pump with a fuel pressure regulator. Once you have those i recomend you put in 550 cc injectors because that will be plenty for a 16g settup. The only problem with the DSM link is that you have to have a 95 or under EPROM ecu in your car, the afc should be fine if you have a 96 and up. An for the intercooler, the stock intercooler can handle 350-400 hp, but it would be a great idea to upgrade to a larger one, like the greddy 24. You may also want to upgrade your clutch, the stock cant handle too much. Also consider plug wires and if possible an ignition system so you dont run into any unwanted detonation.

550s will not be enough for pump gas on a 16g. 660s will be plenty, but if you run an AFC and race gas you may not be able to lean out enough. Stock intercooler is complete garbage and will not allow you to max out the setup. But you should be able to trap over 110 with it while you save up for the FMIC. You dont NEED the FMIC to run that turbo, but you will need it to make the most of that turbo. The greedy FMICs are a bit on the small side. For 8-900 bucks you can get a full size FMIC from SBR (the I use, on my site) or for a little more from VP. Plugs and wires should be in good shape, but they have nothing to do with detonation. A 190 pump will flow more than a 16g can use, but if you plan to go to a bigger turbo some day it might make sense to get the 255 and regulator now if you are up to it.

I know I sound like a broken record, but for a 16g setup and 350 whp, see Joe Gs mod list on www.posracing.net. You can see what he used to get the job done, and decide what you want to use from that list and what you want to change, etc.

he's talking about the EVO III 16g, not the regular or the big. i only mention this because it seems to have been overlooked by what i've read about it in other threads. i thought the EVO is capable of 420hp+ easy with those mods??? i've jumped ships from the 18g to the EVO 16g because i thought the differences were negligible???

The EVO 16g will do 44 pounds to the big/small 16Gs 38-40 pounds. But 99% of poeple never get over 35 poudns anyway ;) Everything in my above post still applies.

why not over 35 lbs? how could you max out this turbo? i switched camps on the turbo thing but now i'm second guessing...

To get over 35 pounds you need a good freeflowing setup, mostly cams. 99% of DSMers still dont have cams. When you talk about maxing out a turbo it has very little to do with boost pressure, but more to do with airflow. A turbo of a given size can only move so much air. What pressure that translates to depends on how much air the motor consumes, just boost is just wasted flow that the motor cant use that builds up as pressure before the motor. One guy has run 44 pounds on the EVO16g, which useing the times 10 rule comes out to 440 HP. Thats unlikely though since that rule doesnt really apply when a turbo is completely maxed out and blowing hot air. The HP per pound of air is lower since it is less effective.

I dont even remember where I was going with this...

The 10 rule seems to do well enough, but from other people's experience, 400hp seems to be a stretch for the EVO 16g. I don't doubt it can be done, but like 95 GSXracer said, it will take more than bolt-ons to achieve it.
