I am looking for a cold air intake system for my 1988 LeBaron but have not found one. What is a good system at a reasonable price?

doubtfull you will find an aftermarket one for that car.
best bet is to buy one for a similar engine and modify.

From what type of engine should I get it? And about how much would it cost? My car is an 88 with a 2.5L 4cyl.

i would go with the fabrication route, 3 or 4 inch pvc and a nice filter of some sort, go to a plumbing supply place and get the elbows you may need. thats just my 2 cents tho. why spend all that money on something you are gunna have to cut and hack anyway?

Some pipe sized for your needs and a hacksaw. :) ABS/PVC cement, depending on what pipe you use, if plastic.

How much of a differnece is there in performance if you fabricate your own compared to buying one.

probally not much. a performance intake does not make a huge differance on an unmodified engine, as long as you have no flow restrictions and a good filter (K&N or whatever) you should be alright

A Cold Air Intake works are follows: You get a 1% gain in HP for every 11.1 degree's you lower the intake temperature. This is because Cold Air is more dense than warm air, which basically means more air molecules are in the same space, to put it simply. If your motor is 250HP and the underhood temp is 110 degree's and the outside temp is 70 degreess, that's a difference of 40 degrees. That comes to a 3.6% gain in HP, or 9HP (in this example). I hope that explains a little the principle on how and why a CAI works.
