i was just curious. i know pretty much all the basics of piston engines but am a little hazy on rotorys. i want to buy a rx-7 but want to keep it in VERY GOOD condition. with what ive been reading the main prob w/rotorys is how cool you need to keep it. if i just left the stock 13b w/stock tt, and just lightened the hell out of it would it perform just as well as me putting aftermarket performance parts on it or would i still need to put a better cooling system in it? thx for the help.

From what I've heard if your going to constantly push the turbo models stock or not, you should at least do some minor cooling upgrades. As for keeping it in good condition, keep it cool, obviously, be very diligent with oil changes, and keep an eye on your spark plugs. the plugs in my na actually crumbled right after i bought it because the previous owner hadn't replaced them for in couple of months!

Redline has good advice. Definitely upgrade the intercooler and radiator if you're going to be doing some spirited driving. Even if you don't push the car, the extra cooling benefits are worth their weight in gold.

The FD RX-7 is already and obscenely light car, even the heavier Touring model is a featherweight at just over 2800lbs.

the FC is pretty much the same when it comes to cooling, I hear a new oil cooler is a good fix as well, anyone know anything about that? and wouldn't keeping the engine cooler give you peak hp for an extended amount of time even though it wouldn't give you any added horses?

R1 and R2 models of FD come with oil coolers. There are great for keeping the negine temp down. Also if you intend on doing high speed driving i suggest you upgrade the cooling system.

If you do decide to get an FD one of the first "mods" you should do is eather lineralize the stock temp guage or get a new one. The factory one is very innacurate. Once it registers that you are overheating the damage is most likley already done.

you may also want to go with duel oil coolers. i'm pretty sure the japanese model had duel. As for maintanance, takin it to the redline helps clean carbon build up along apex seals. it wouldn't be a bad idea to get some type of boost control, that way you turn turbos down for daily driving. watch that second turbo, it likes to go out.
