Twin turbo Road Runner

Since I never get anything done, this time I'll post the pics when I actually finished the model! I hate posting cool stuff to leave everyone drooling, and never finish the project. This is the AMT 1968 Road Runner. Engine is from the AMT 1971 Duster because I lost the Hemi. The only engine parts from the kit: block, transmission, heads, valve cover, oil pan, and accessories. Everything else was scratcbuilt.

The beginning. I was just testing these resin rims out on different bodies because I was excited to have them. They looked so good on this car I decided to build it.

Here they are painted up.
http://images5.fotki.com/v54/photos/4/43509/641764/P1150025-vi.jpg

Door handles shaved, body primed. Then primed again. And again, until all the scratches and dips are gone. All panel lines were scribed deeper and wider so they don't get lost in the paint.

Color is Testors Anthracite Grey. It looked darker in the bottle, but oh well. Good enough, I guess. I used Testors Clear for some stupid reason rather than my usual automotive clear, so I ended up rubbing through in one spot while hand polishing. Automotive clear is so hard I can Dremel it and not burn through. See what scribing panel lines can do? They do not have a wash applied to them at this stage.

Turbo manifolds being done. .050 solder and brass tubing. I'd use aluminum tubing but brass is all the store had at this size.

http://images5.fotki.com/v56/photos/4/43509/641764/P1260049-vi.jpg

Turbos and intercooler installed. Spark plug and misc wires and hoses were added before installing the engine.
http://images5.fotki.com/v57/photos/4/43509/641764/P1280002-vi.jpg

Resin air filters. Painted black, then drybrushed with red. Aluminum rod and vinyl tubing to connect them together.
http://images5.fotki.com/v56/photos/4/43509/641764/P1280004-vi.jpg

Filters are mostly hidded by the bodywork, sadly. Not much room in there anyway and this was the best place for it. Lots of cool air to pick up!

Slightly warped frame but the kit fits together so well that a little weight while the glue dries pretty much straightens everything out. Caked polish lightened up the panel lines but a dark wash fixed that right up. BMF (my worst enemy) is applied. The kit comes with full windows, and I added an "extra touch" by having a fingerprint inside the glass. :banghead:

You can sort of make out the wastegate from here. I forgot to paint the horn button.
http://images5.fotki.com/v57/photos/4/43509/641764/P1300026-vi.jpg

More tomorrow when there's enough light. The car is pretty much finished.

Nice work on that motor, spotted it the other night on HHMB. :smokin:
Like your touch on the resin wheel/tyre combo, if I hadn't seen the before shot, I'd say they were rubber...
Can't wait to see the finished shots

cheers stump :aus:

I don't know how I lost the Hemi. I cleaned up the kitchen table to make room for Christmas eve dinner, and I must've stuck it in a random box somewhere.

Vwman, which intake parts? There are a lot of them! lol.. It's all random styrene square and round parts just hacked together. Buy a bunch of different shapes & sizes and you can make just about anything. The tubing is all aluminum.

Yeah those are Cobra wheels. When I have extra RTV I don't like to waste it, so I make a mold of something simple. I just look around and find something at random to stick to a bottom of a cup, and pour RTV on it. In this case the Cobra wheel is what I grabbed. The rings are cut down from other resin wheel backs.

MEEP!

on the rear panel close to the taillights. nicely done.

99.9% done. Mirrors, headlight "lens" (stupid chrome headlights), license plate, and other stuff I'll notice later on which I'll add as I remember them. Need more lights in my photo booth for days like this. It's raining outside which eliminates most of my natural light shots. Let's play the "Find the ruined clearcoat spots" game. Chassis still needs a driveshaft and springs, but I'll probably never get to that unless I enter it in a contest. Hood doesn't fit so I made springs to look like the rear edge is supposed to be lifted like that. If the hood was a scale thickness it would fit. As it is, the hood must be 4" scale thick.

008, this model looks like it came straight out of a Hot Rod Magazine featured rides article!! I love the stance, and the engine is superb. Are those 4 holes on the header collector flange for the turbo to mount to? That's insane! I like the intake filters too. How did you make the turbos? Can you do a tutorial on that?
Great work man.

That's just so awesome. On so many levels. I absolutely love it. Man oh man. I love the engine the best. Great detail on the turbos, the wiring, the hoses, everything. Who cares if the hood doesn't fit, leave it off!! And better yet, lean it against the car to hide whatever blemishes you claim ('cause I don't beleive you) exist in the clearcoat.

What a great engine! Wow! What a magnificent engine....

He sells those rims and wheels on his website www.scalespeedworks.com

008
09-13-2004, 10:48 AM
Hey guys, thanks. Actually I don't sell the wheels. I just made a few copies for myself. They are the wheels from the Revell '99 Cobra Mustang with extra "lip" added to them. The outer lip is actually made from the inner lip of the Super Stallion rims. The tires I think are from the Revell 1/24 Testarossa. I have the molds and the tires aren't the greatest of quality coming out of the molds. I only use the mold when I have leftover resin.
