so ya, i just found this, and this is cool, a whole thing dedicated to amc. Anyways, i just thought id tell ya guys that my first car was a 68 javelin sst. I got it when i was 13 for 2200 bucks. It wsa matador red, with a white pinstripe down the side. It had a 232 straight-6 engine.
When i got it it was pretty run down, i put a new cherry bomb muffler on it, cleaned the alternatore, new battery, new front seats and new stereo.
I ended up selling it around Christmas two years ago becuz rebuilding a javelin, let alone an amc is no easy task on a 14 year olds income. So i sold it for 1900. I loved that car a lot, and i was wondering, what kind of amc's do you guys have, and what kind of experiences have you had with them?

I have a couple of Jeeps, which does not really apply to this forum.
I started driving with a '77 Jeep Wagoneer with a 401 V8.
I sold the thing when I was 18 and did not realise what a terrific and rare engine the 401 was. Always regretted that as every truck older truck I ever had since was not as good.
Just about every worthwhile AMC around here rusted out long ago, so those left are pretty expensive. A buddy of mine has a Gremlin with a small block chevy (He takes that one to the drag strip where it spins the tires for at least the first 100 ft) , and another Gremiln X with a 304 and auto.
He used to have a really nice 2 door Hornet with a hatchback, 4 speed and a 304. It looked and ran like a Mustang GT.
So, where are you allowed to drive at 14 years old?

well, i didnt drive it, i just worked on it and made it look pretty. It was more of a learning tool than a driving car.

Hey, thats a fine thing to do. Not too many people have the opportunity or interest to learn about mechanical things these days.
They learn all about computers, which is good too, but won't help you when you can't get your car started.

I wish I had a car (even just to work on) when I was that young. It is amazing how many people can't even change a tire, let alone know what is going on under the hood.

I have a 1969 Javelin SST and a 1965 Rambler Marlin. The Javelin runs and has about 58,000 miles on it. My Marlin doesn't run yet, but I am planning to turn the motor into a twin turbo beast. Those old 327 V8's can take about 20lbs of boost no problem. Fine cars!

I own a 77 gremlin x. It was my first car that i'v been activly working on for about 3 years. almost everything under the hood that is replacable has been replaced, everything on the body that is removeable has been removed, cleaned, replaced ... you know the general stuff that has to be done at some point that most people dont get around to. I'm currently working on the interior, redied pannels, custom fiberglass door panels, custom fiberglass dash/console. My father was the second owner of the car and drive it for about two years before he passed away. Anyway I love AMC and expecially 77-78 gremlins. This car has been a learning experiece really, I started out knowing alot being around cars my entire life, but didnt have any really hands on experience other than helping other people.

My first car was a 1970 Rebel SST 390. My Dad wouldn't let me drive it until I knew how to do preventative / basic maintenance on a car (oil change, change the tires, check fluids, etc...). He said I wasn't going to be a "gas n' go" driver. Man, it hauled a**! It was 12 years old by the time I got it. We had our problems with it in it's early years but by the time I got to drive it, it ran great! I was hell on wheels!
Working on cars really paid off! I got into racing in the early 90's and worked on my own car(s) a 70' Chevelle and a 70' Cutlass.
Not bad for a chick.......

Hey AMC fans,
I know of an estate with some old Gremlins in a field. The executor of this estate wants to get rid of these 3 old cars. If you have a serious interest in them please contact me.
These cars are somewhere in Atlanta, GA.
See photo in my gallery -- I do not know more than this about the cars. One is Blue, one yellow and one green, I think. All are rusted.
