cv-joint boots

I have a 91 Z-71 and the cv boots on the front axle has busted. My guestion is if I should replace it with a split boot or a O.E style boot. If I should use a O.E how hard is it to pull the axle and replace it Thinks for the Help.

The OE boots are kind of a pain to get on. I had a split boot on my 94 and it was fine for years. Probably still is, except I dont own it now.

I have used 2 different types of split boots in the past, one was a type of snap together the other used small nuts and bolts, both a PIA to put on. Mixed results but the nut and bolt one lasted longer but failed at the seam. If you go with a split boot my experiance is to check it once a month to make sure the seam is still closed otherwise you're no better off than before you replaced it. I have since had to replace both half shafts and and I wonder if I had gone to the trouble of an OE boot if I would have had too.

Another Option... Take your whole CV Axle to a CV/Axle shop. We have one here that will give you a rebuilt CV axle (with warranty) in exchange for your broken one. They charged like 50 for a torn boot, 100 for one broken joint and so on....
That was very handy to just hand them 50 bucks and an axle, and they handed you a good one.

yea, i have the same problem. I just two new axles less than 2 years ago, and the left cv boot just tore when I checked it last time I chagned the oil. It burns me up that a brand new axle only lasted two years. The only thing i can think of is all the pot holes in Boston.

Im going to try and save it with a split boot cause its not making any noises and the grease splatter is still fresh.
