Race Shifting

Hey guys I've only had my GSR for about a week or two. Some people have been asking me to race, and now that I got the sport clutch down (shifting very quickly) I wanted to know when the best times to shift were. if somebody could tell me a 1st= 4k RPMs 2nd= 5k RPMs description on when to shift I would appreciate it. I don't want to spend over 200 dollars on a tach with a shift light, so if I know the numbers I'll be ok. I understand people will have different opinions but any info is help. Thx

wow dude you need to not be racing yet. obviously you do not know your car. you have vtec that probably kicks in around 5500 rpm and thats where you will start making your power. if you are shifting at 4000rpm i cant even immagine that lol that is what you should be launching at. get used to your car first and you will learn where it makes the most power and when you should shift. bassically say your car makes its most power at 7000 rpm and your revlimiter is say 8500 rpm. I would shift around 8300 or so so when you shift into the next gear you are as close to your max HP as possible. learn your car and everything before you start racing. start by practicing when the road is clear and you got a redlight, bring your rpms up to about 2000 rpm and try to take off without spinnging your tires (slip the clutch a little) then keep rasing them RPM. when you race someone on the street your lanch is most of the race. you will soon learn when to shift. I shift my LS civic at just about 7200rpm (rev limiter is 7200 i think, i only hit it once doing a burnout at the track) i shift right before i know the revlimiter will be kicking in so when i hit the next gear im already real close to the max power.

good luck
Kyle

PS: a shift light and a tach wont help you much, a stock tach is just fine (listen to your motor) the shift light is set by you, your engine does not tell it when it wants to shift and if it did it would want you shifting at like 3000 rpm lol

I know, I didn't plan on racing yet. I had (sadly its crunched :() a 91 CRX that was pretty quick. I am still getting used to the clutch in the integra as it is quite different. About the 4k rpm first.... that was a random number i picked lol I know not to shift at 4k when racing. I just got off of work at 1 in the mornin so I was able to test it out a little. I noticed the most power at about 5500 to 6000 so i guess thats where i'm making peak power. I deffinately won't be racing till I know my car better, I just wanted some help on what to learn about my car. So I should pratice take offs, shifting into a high power RPM, and what else? I want to know the ins and outs of my car before I race. Thx for all the help. Lata

well this week i ran my '95 gsr against my friend's '02 ser spec-v. in the runs that we made i launched a little under 4k rpm and feathered the clutch and launched on him like crazy.....almost a car length. i was testing a theory i had heard about shifting my car around 7k rpms, because i did that my friend beat me in both the runs we made. the next night my friend has a badass g-tech meter and we put it in my car and ran it a few times. the first time i didnt feather the clutch and was spinning alot on my launch and ran a 15.7 at 91mph. my friend took his car out and ran his about 6 times and the best time he could get in his ser is a 15.7 with good launches. im going to try again sometime soon and hopefully get a 15.4 like i think i can.

well... i have a 97 gsr with only cat back exhaust and CAI but i found launching around 3500 rpms worked out well.. you just have to get a feel for the car and different conditions.. also i believe vtec kicks in around 4500 rpms.. if you saving gas.. shift around 3000 rpms but in racing.. ill go up into the 7000s .. seems to be about right but i havent payed that close attention cuz i need to still get to a track... goodluck
