I have started hearing two weird noises.. one is a squeal coming from the right side of the engine compartment and occurs mainly on start up, I suspect power steering pump or alternator, next is a rattle from what sounds like the wheel, when I go over frost heave on the roads. it sounds like the wheel will fall off, but the steeringis ok, my thought front struts? Any input would be appreciated.

a squeal coming from the right side mainly on start up sounds like a belt needs replaced...brake rattle is common...anti rattle clips may be broke

Hello guys!
I am new here and I have a question in regards to "weird noises" As most 96 Grand Caravans we have had tons of issues with our electrical system and then our transmission...the transmission seems to be getting worse :( but recently we have heard a noise like the belts were squeeling, then the van would warm up and it would go away! Now more recently, the noise is usually there at start-up (not always) but the squeeling does not go away, but it starts with what sounds like a grinding metal against metal then the squeeling. it ONLY squeels when you accelerate, after it warms up if it's cold then it squels ALL THE TIME! We have been able to narrow down the proximaty of the noise, it is in the drivers side and appears to be lets say under the seat. I would really appreciate you help with this. Oh also it have 124,000 miles on it!
Thanks!!!
Lynne

Lynne, You may get a better response if you post this as a stand alone thread. I know what you mean about tons of issues. These vans have gremlins in them. I would like to tell you that your noise is just a belt or something simple like that but, it sounds much more serious than that. That noise sounds like to me like a bad CV joint. But you please repost your problem as a stand alone thread, there are a few trany exsperts on this forum that may be able to give you a better answer. Ride On, digimon

Quick answer, Belt Tension Pulley. It’s the assembly that is spring loaded to put pressure/tension on the serpentine belt to keep it tight. The bearings go bad after awhile and gets VERY noisy emitting a loud squeal. Look for a large metal disk the belt wraps around and you’ve found it. Get it replaced ASAP or the whole assembly will become seized causing the pulley to snap-off or the belt to come off or break. Good Luck!
