well, i think i may need to change several ball joints on my car, the question is should i do it myself or have it done for me. and is there any way to do a ball joint replacement with out buying a $100+ piece of machinery.

If you have an air compressor, and know somebody with the tools, do it yourself. If you don't, take it to a shop. Unless you plan on replacing them often (like in our 94 Cougar XR7), don't spend the money for the equip.

upper ball joints are expensive. around 200 cnd. mainly cuz they come with the upper arm

just yank out the lower arm and buy a new ball-joint, it only costs like $10 to have a machine shop press a new one in.

ok can someone send me the adress of a sight that sells the reasonably priced ball joints, or sells the tools, i have a compressor or acess to one. please help.

My upper control arm (that contains the ball joint) was $80 CDN...it took me about 20 minutes to replace it and then I had a brand new control arm and upper ball joint...it's one castle nut on the ball joint and two nuts in the engine bay...why go through the hassle of pressing in a new b-joint?
The lower ball joints were a little harder but still not that difficult...the ball joint itself was less than $10 CDN...getting the old one out was a tad difficult but it was being replaced so I didn't care about ruining it...I just took and air hammer to it and popped it out. To put it back in I lined it up and tightened it down...until it set in place...all tolled it took about half an hour.
Make sure to have spare "cotter pins" on hand for the castle nuts...you'll need them. The ball joints I bought at UAP/Napa and the control arm was at an aftermarket parts store...
I also changed my tie rod ends at the same time...5-10 mins...and they were about $20 CDN each at the same parts store as the control arm.
In the end I change both upper control arms w/ball joints and the lower ball joints and tie rod ends in 1-3 hours, for less than $300 CDN and paid no labour costs other than my own sweat and elbow grease.
