Do you have the 350? If so, I would say you're getting pretty good considering the motor and the fact that its a 4x4. I know my old 91 got terrible gas mileage. I would probably go with a hypertech chip. It should give you a little better mileage, and you can get some performance increase to boot.

Hypertech makes two different chips for your model truck. The street runner and the thermomaster. With the thermomaster, you'll need to purchase the hypertech powerstat(thermostat) to go in conjunction with the chip. This chip will give you the largest power increase, but it cost alittle more than the street runner. Alot of websites sell these chips, I'll post a link to one of the many. Just do a little research and find out which website has the best deal on it.

Here's the link to hypertech's installation guide. It explains things pretty well and tells you where everything is located.
