Actually no. I've been in the car quite a few times but I have never taken one out on the road.

Awesome photos - thanks for the little peeks at automotive perfection!

I see you got that CAR Magazine with the 0-100-0 test from Ebay.

Also - how badass are those Facom tools? I always find myself drooling over them in the Griots Garage catalog. :iceslolan

One last thing - can someone explain the relation to Surrey and Woking. I'm not quite clear on it actually - we always say the cars are built in Woking, but the chassis plaque clearly calls it Surrey. Was Surrey where the chassis were fabricated and Woking where the final assembly took place? That seems like it might be the case from what I'm remembering at the moment.

that key hanger, is it real carbonfibre? and has it got the chassis no. inscripted? and what's that orange thing?

The orange thing looks like a screwdriver

Woking is a town at the north end of the county of Surrey. Surrey is situated to the south west of London.

Woking itself is a pretty unremarkable and crap town. It is notable for very little except that Paul Weller and the Jam came from here and quite a while ago, H. G Wells lived here for a bit. It was during this time that he wrote the War of the Worlds. So despite what Hollywood would have you believe, the aliens landed on common land about a mile north of Woking town centre.

Edited to say:

I reckon the reason the plates don't say Woking on them is that the carbon parts were manufactured at McLaren Composites which at that time was situated just south of Guildford, a slightly bigger town about 8 miles to the south of Woking. McLaren Composites has now moved to the south coast.

It's a flat carbon piece about 30mm long. It has the F1 logo etched into it.

The orange thing is the screwdriver needed to open the panels on the car. The LM (and GTR, presumably) have these dzus-type fasteners that secure the engine cover, side panel doors, nose panel, etc. instead of the handles and latches that are found on the roadcar. I think the dzus fasteners were a McLaren invention from the early 1980s.

Let's play a game: the chassis number can be found in 2 places in that last photo... the first is obviously on the plaque... where is the second?

It is engraved right in the key itself, on the metal.

And btw, thanks for the nice pics.

That's pretty neat - are the road car keys the same way?

I'd assume in most cases an owner wouldn't have trouble knowing which key starts their McLaren, but in the case of this particular owner and a few others around the world who happen to own multiple F1s that would be a helpful touch. Also, when the cars are in for servicing that would make things a little easier as well.

BTW: Drew - you're a pretty responsible guy if you can hold the key to the LM in your hand and not take it for that joy ride you mentioned the other day. Or have you.... :evillol: :nono:

yeah, Woking is pretty boring. I tried to find the factory once, gave up after 1/2 an hour, too miserable for me.

Surrey is the state, woking is a town in that state to give a US comparison ;)

Yeah, the different parts aren't to difficult to find (if you know roughly where they are). Before anyone moved to MTC, the group was situated in 3 different business parks, all within a couple of hundred miles of each other. This part of Woking is also the poorest in the whole of Surrey, although in this country that's kind of like saying this is the shitty end of the Hamptons...

Drew - you're not like a drug dealer, are you?

You know what I mean - you give us a couple of fixes for free, and then suddenly once we're hooked you start charging us an arm and a leg for more. :iceslolan :naughty:

Anyway - thanks, I could stare at that engine bay for a long time I'm sure.

These are nothing new. Just from a different angle. The car's 8 years old and we've all seen these details before.

Unfortunately, I didn't take the headlight picture. That was someone else trying out his camera after taking photography classes.

What details do you really need? I assume everyone has seen just about every portion of that car that is worthwhile to look at.

some of those would make good wallpaper and poster material...if they were bigger :(

Drew:

if you can, i would like to see the tire tread (frontend) of F1 LM. a few more shots of the drivers panel would do nicely. also if at all possible, can you snap one from the interior looking back at the engine bay? and one shot of the details underneath the frontend bonnet like this:

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/F1LM/lm_nose_sm.jpg

...if you ever find some time for doing it, we would greatly appreciate it. thanks :)

I can fix that one for you right now:

We'll see about the detailed shots. The position of the car is not very conducive to taking detailed pictures.
