Earily this fall i bought a 83 carpice from a elderly couple and have a few questions.
First off the only problems with the body is the front fenders they both have rust thoughs on them. where is a good place to get them?
anyone know what tranny i got? its a 4 speed but the converter doesnt lockup and i havent had a chance to climb under ut yet to see if its a 700r4 or 2004r
Im getting ready to do some major engine work to it. Im gonna put on a perfomer rpm intake, holley street avenger, a larger cam, headers, and a set of 305 heads that i have had ported, had the head machined for 1.94 intake valves, and screw in studs put in.
any other engine ideas?

don't drop to much into a 305, they cost as much as a 350 inparts
and will not run with the 350 because the small bore shrouds the valves

you PROBABLY have a 27 spline 700R4 in there. but it could be a 200 depending on motor - easiest way is look at the pan, mostly square pan - 700, more rectangular - 200
fix that lockup soon, if it cant dump the converter fluid to apply the clutch then it WILL burn the fluid in the clutch - places to look: run the car and look for the scan tool to indicate lockup requested. if not, suspect a brake switch under the dash to be off. of so, look for the harness to be conencted on the tranny, if so, you might need a solenoid, however they tend to fail by locking up too soon, not never.
what cast number is on the heads? the car was around 8:1, the 305 heads might raise that to 10:1, better 305 heads had 184/150 valves and could run as is in a 350 caprice-proper motor with a 1.6:1 rocker arm, BUT, before 84, 305s had 172 150 valves which were only ever used on 350s if it was a low rpm torquer for a truck. wait, Im missing something, I assumed from the other poster you were gonna put in a 350 - if you are buildingthe 305, gimme the cast number, you might just want a newer set of heads for the bigger valves. 194/150 is doable on a 305 but generally is skipped over unless its a screamer
